Anyone watching the Oscars Sunday night?

I used to enjoy watching the Oscars, mostly to watch the chosen ones "strut and fret their hour upon the stage," to paraphrase Shakespeare's right-on observation from many years ago.
Although I rarely saw any of the nominated movies, I got a kick out of watching the nominees twist and turn for the cameras, basking in designer gowns and tuxedoes, often dripping in pounds of coveted jewelry. The night was resplendent in glamour and glitz, with hopefuls, big smiles and perfect teeth everywhere. The Oscars was entertaining and, despite the abundance of self-indulgence and shameful waste of money, for the most part I enjoyed them.
Not anymore. The Oscars, like most celebrity events today, has gone way beyond forgivable self-indulgence. Like most everything in our lives these days, from the invasion into our bedrooms and bathrooms to how many cupcakes we should eat, the Oscars has become the platform for busybodies and bloviators to strut upon the stage, to rant and rave and spew their self-righteous opinions on us.
Hopefully, all this self-righteous bloviating will eventually lower the ratings and the Oscars will fade into oblivion.

I used to like watching the red carpet to see what everyone was wearing but this year I knew it would be way too political for my tastes.

@BelleStarr That's your prerogative completely and I'm glad you still say she's a great actress, unlike a certain orange creature I could name...lol! Seriously, we all have a right to our own opinions and I guess that's my point, that celebrities have the same rights as the rest of us. I know some people don't like to hear their views...period...and I get it but some people like to complain about stars giving their political views and about most of them being liberals but for some reason when a celebrity is a conservative that's a whole different story and they're all for them speaking out. I say they ALL have free speech rights.

@anniepa I personally couldn't care less what MMeryl Streep thinks on any subject especially politics. She is a great actress that is it.

I enjoy movies and used to anticipate this awards show, but no longer. I'll watch some fun youtube videos by artists I enjoy and have a great evening. I really don't care who wins. I've seen most of the nominated movies though.

I stopped watching the Oscars years ago because it was pointless. You knew the winners so surprises were rare. And who cares? Who can name the Best Picture winner from 5 years ago without looking it up?

I know this is an "old" discussion but I just found it so it's new to me...lol! I watched the Oscars and I must say it had the most memorable ending since the guy streaked across the stage years ago. Wow, I'm really dating myself, aren't I? I'm a bit of a movie TV buff so I always enjoy awards season. I've often learned of movies I hadn't heard of before since in my area many of the best movies never make it to our local theaters.
I have no problem with the stars expressing their views. They're people with the same free speech rights we all have and they've been given a platform from which to exercise this right by their many fans. We have a person in our White House who wouldn't be there if he hadn't been a self-righteous bloviating bully on reality TV after all so why shouldn't actors who have actual talent be allowed to also speak out?
