Mumps Outbreak

Prior to 1967 when the MMR Vaccine was developed, most kids wound up with the Mumps as a normal illness. Swollen cheeks and neck to where you looked like you were a squirrel collecting nuts to take back to the winter den. Fever and upset stomach which lasted about 7 days. After the vaccine was developed, cases of the Mumps dropped by 99%. Well apparently like all vaccines, the MMR is no longer really effective as the cases across the USA are considered of outbreak proportions in all states. Two doses were recommended previously and now they are talking about three. I wonder if adults are now capable of getting the virus; particularly if you have children or work with children (ie schools, colleges, camps). It might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about possibly getting an updated shot or if it would do any good at all.

I had the mumps as a child. I know there has been a number of outbreaks around here lately. There was one case where almost the entire hockey team had mumps.

They did say that sports teams were very vulnerable in passing it on @Happy2BeMe .

That is cause for concern. These vaccines do lose their effectiveness after a while.

The vaccines are making the germs stronger and stronger. Now we have outbreaks again and soon 3 shots will not be enough and you will need 4.

People need to go back to the old days when 'natural herbs' were the healing factor @LadyDuck . The Chinese don't live to the ages that they do because they pop pills for everything or do shots. Too many people also overdo bacterial washes (hands); they are killing the good bacteria.

Hmm. I hadn't heard about that. I work at a college AND with both littlies and older kids. Fortunately, I DO carry nuts back to my house in my cheeks, so nobody else would notice, even if my stomach were hurting.

That is terrible that the bacteria is getting stronger. New updated medicine should practice wisely to save the people.

It must be some sort of a new strain @fishtiger58 . Just like the flu re-developes different strains; maybe it took awhile for the Mumps to do the same.

There's been a mumps break out here at a local college - several students have gotten it. They had to stay away from the school for 10 days.

I think there are several reasons but my main one is the chemicals, hormones, pesticides, herbicides, steroids etc., that are in our foods today @Hate2Iron . I think (and I'm not a scientist) that they are completely changing our chemical make-up which is making us more susceptible to the old-timey diseases.

I had it as a kid and both my sons were vaccinated for it. I hope I would never get it again.

It's odd how diseases like this never seem to be completely eradicated.

They just re-develope themselves @jaboUK . I think maybe catching these diseases is a way to make our immune systems stronger. For the ones who die from it probably had very weak immune systems to start with.

It could be caused by so many people refusing to have the vaccinations maybe. I read that there is a large outbreak in the National Hockey League too.
