Making My Own Watercolor Sketchbooks

I guess when you learn something useful, there's no turning back. I learned to make my own watercolor sketchbooks about 2 years ago, out of frustration and necessity, as watercolor sketchbooks were then hard to find in my neck of the woods. But loose watercolor paper sheets were often available, so I made do with that. With the help of my trusty paper cutter, I was able to make a thick sketchbook out of a huge pad. Lately though I've moved to making to sketchbooks that are saddle-stitched. I now use cold-pressed Fabriano watercolor paper. It's only 200 gsm but it's great for light to medium washes. In less than a month, I've made a 9" x 6" sketchbook, a traveler's notebook insert, and a teeny-weeny 4" x 4.5" watercolor sketchbook. This tiny thing is often in my bag and I take it with me when I go out. ** Image credit: Unsplash /Pixabay

That sounds wonderful. I haven't done any watercolors in years but I like the idea of the sketch book.

@almostoveryou Sound like fun, i should start taking a sketch book with me too. I do take it when we camp, but don't think of it on a daily basis.

I now keep this small sketchbook in my bag and take it with me when I'm likely to have the time to sketch. I love that I can do quick sketches in a small paper size. It also helps me practice sketching on a more regular basis. It doesn't matter if my sketches lack details or realism. The goal is to keep sketching and documenting life in the process.

This is a really good idea and very clever to learn to make your own when you couldn't buy any. I presume it is a lot cheaper too.

@almostoveryou I guess I meant cheaper than buying a sketchbook.

It would indeed come out cheaper if you use materials from your own stash. In this case, the only thing that I bought was the Fabriano paper which isn't much.
