The Craziest Thing!

United States

The Cardinal is the state bird of Virginia and a couple other states, I know. However, this bird can go a little crazy in the Spring breeding season. While I was parked in a shopping area, a cardinal attacked the mirror on my car, like it was crazy. So I did some research. Male cardinals have been known to attack their own reflection in car mirrors, hub-caps, picture windows and sliding glass doors, in an effort to protect their territory. It will even attack red paper or other red items. Unfortunately, this behavior can go on for several weeks. One solution is to cover shiny surfaces, like your car mirrors, because these attacking birds can actually damage your car. Have you ever seen a cardinal attack something?

I've seen several different species of birds attaching themselves in car mirrors. We had a couple of crows tear holes in the flyscreen on our French windows trying to get at the 'birds' inside.

Wow! So other birds do the same thing as the cardinals. I didn't realize that.

I guess the cardinals are mostly in the north and east of the country.

Very aggressive, during breeding season. When it's snowing, they brighten up the area. They don't go south for the winter, so I have them at my bird feeders all winter long. They are beautiful.

I wasn't sure which states have the cardinal as a state bird. I knew that WV and VA were two states that did.
