Gearing up for a car boot sale in a few weeks.

I have been trying to declutter gradually and now we have a heaven-sent opportunity to get rid of some more stuff. A tiny settlement not far from Gnomesville in south-west Western Australia is having a car-boot sale towards the end of March. What's a car-boot sale I hear you ask. A car boot in Australia equates to the trunk of an American car. So you fill the boot with items you no long need, park under a shady tree at the venue and hopefully others will come along and buy some of your goods. There is a little store where we will gather any time from 7am onwards. We will probably take the trailer and a couple of trestles to make it easier to display our items. I know I'll have some books, linen, old cameras, bric-a-brac and who knows what else. Vince is getting enthused too. As soon as our house concert is over, we'll start going through cupboards and finding things to sell. Postage here is now so expensive that selling on Ebay is much less attractive than it once was. Days like this are always a great deal of fun and I only hope we don't come home with more than we take there.

That is such a great idea and a good way of getting rid of things that you no longer need,

I think it will be good fun as long as we can resist all the good 'bargains' that everyone else has.

@JudyEv And you won't have strangers wandering around your own yard.

@AbbyGreenhill Very good point. They can't case out the place and, where we are, if someone did come in while we were away, no-one would know they were there. So much better this way.

I wouldn't mind betting you picked up a lot of books over the years.

Good luck with selling off what you no longer need. We haven't had a sale yet, but are strongly thinking we might couple up with our son and another couple for yard sale in a couple of months.

The good thing with this is that, if you don't have much to sell, it doesn't matter as there are enough sellers to make the day a success.

We will have "flea markets" where many vendors will gather.

It is a good way to get rid of unwanted stuffs and make money. Car-boot sale is not a common event here. But I would love if they organized it often. I have a few items in the house that I would love to sell. Good luck with the sales. I hope you can sell a lot, or even better, all of them

It would be good to sell all of them. We could have a garage sale at the house but we live out of town and I don't think many people would come out to us. We don't have enough items to make a really good display but as part of a larger group, it will be fine.

@JudyEv I like flea markets have not been to one in a long time. Low key can be good and bad hopefully there will be a lot of business.

Lol. Another name would be 'flea market' I guess. It will be very low-key and if you only have a few things that would be okay too.

Postage costs have killed it for us. The CEO of Australia Post has just resigned after it was revealed his salary was $5.6 million. $5.6 million!! No wonder postage charges have been going up. Our Prime Minister's salary is a 10th of that.

I dont know that I have seen a 'boot' type sale, or trunk sale as we call those parts of the car here. but I have seen flea markets and stuff, open air type things

This would be similar to a flea market though all at this one will be locals and people who don't normally have sales.

Hope you get a good day! Cake stands like the one in the photo are back in fashion again over here. I can't believe there's actually a place called Gnomesville! Do people there have garden gnomes I wonder?

Gnomesville is an roadside area that is filled with gnomes. It's not a real town. If you search 'gnomesville' on here you'll come up with posts I've done about it.

It sounds like fun. Hope you get rid of a lot. They have a huge garage sale in the parking lot of the school here once every couple of months. It's interesting what people will buy.

We used to go regularly when we lived in the city. There were all sorts of stalls and we picked up some very useful items in those days.

The term "boot" comes from England and I hadn't picked up that it was used Down Under also.

I should imagine our car part names are all English rather than American. We have a glove-box but I think they have another term of it too.

I have only ever been to one car boot sale and that was in a little country hamlet of one pub and four houses. While there was a lot of stuff there, nothing that caught my eye. Never been tempted to visit one again.

We don't go often although we used to when we lived in the city. We often picked up handy things. One was a scale that has a digital readout in grams and we've used that a lot, weighing stuff for postage etc.

@allknowing Sorry. I think I misinterpreted your question. We will just put a price that we think is reasonable. Some items we will research a bit first to try to find out what is a fair price.

Thanks but we are not selling the car. The term just means you fill the boot with items you don't want, drive to the selling place, open the boot and hopefully people will buy your unwanted items. :)

That sounds like so much fun... and I'm sure that I would come home with the trunk filled just as full with other people's items... especially if there were books! Hubby calls it a boot too!

Yes, exactly but it doesn't matter if you have very little to sell. And you don't have people snooping round your place which might happen here as we are out of the way of public scrutiny.

@teamfreak16 We are always a bit concerned that someone might hop the back fence and clear out our workshop. No-one would ever see them. We keep the sheds locked now as there does seem to be a few bad elements around in Donnybrook.
