Up for Some Air - "What with all of this rain and all of the bugs crawling around in the ground, I needed some air - some oxygen - something to breathe." "Gnarlyness (a wrinkly, twisty word if there ever was one) is now at the root of all of this tree stuff, barking (like some kind of hound dog) and branching out downstairs. Maybe my underground branches are just learning how to perform holdups." Anyway, that's the tree talking. Must be that this nice tree sits in a puddle of water when the rain comes down. When the water comes down and stays on the ground for days on end, the plants, including trees, come up for air. See? You and I are not the only ones who cannot breathe underwater - or under wet ground either. Image: Uprooted - Gus Kilthau

We have many trees like this in North Carolina. Some with roots like this on our land must be more than 100 years old.

@PatZAnthony - Ms Pat - Old trees are much like old people. they could all use some extra air from time to time. -Gus-

@Ceerios For some of the older trees, we have added mulch each season to help protect the trees and hopefully keep these from falling over. It has happened in our area, and never a pretty site.

It's a nice image. Real tripping stuff though - ready to catch the unwary.

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - It is almost as though those air-starved trees aim at us as we walk among their uppity roots. -Gus-
