National Parks are among the USA’s best vacation bargains. There is nothing more beautiful than a misty October morning in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The very concept of a national park is a uniquely American idea, from the early 19th century. It was landscape artist George Catlin who was anxious about the impact on wildlife and the wilderness by settlers who were moving west, who suggested “a nation’s park, containing man and beast, in all the wild and freshness of their nature’s beauty.”
He promoted this idea and it was embraced by our young country that was “eager to match the cultural treasures of the Old World with its own natural wonders.”
And so Congress donated Yosemite Valley to California for the preservation as a state park in 1864 and designated TWO Million acres in Wyoming and Montana as Yellowstone National Park.
About 60 million visitors visit the 56 national parks every year.
About 2 million visit the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia which is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and West Virginia.
Driving along Skyline Drive offers unparalleled scenic beauty around every turn in the road. Its 105 miles offers breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountain range.
This amazing Park is only about an hour from Washington D.C. It gets a bit crowded in peak seasons. Cabins and other accommodations need to be reserved well in advance, but the park is open year- round for hiking, except for extreme winter weather when Skyline Drive may close temporarily for icy roads.
It’s a beautiful place to visit.

I hope you get to come. It's a beautiful area. We live near Richmond and my brother lives in the Shenandoah Valley. I visit him quite often and we have to drive right over Afton Mountain and underneath Skyline Drive to get to his house.
We have also driven many miles on Skyline Drive. It's so beautiful in the Fall.

Looks lovely. I have always wanted to visit a national park and spend some time there. Perhaps some day.

In fact I just know more about the Yellowstone National Park. It is famous and beautiful and we can see it more often from TV. I haven't heard Shenandoah National Park yet but this photo is so attractive. It must be a great national park, too.

Yes, Shenandoah National Park is one of the most beautiful and amazing parks in the USA. The mountains are exquisite and especially in the Fall of the year.

Thank you for taking me to my favourite song and that is where I got to learn about the place that you have described.

I was born and raised in West Virginia. I went to school there and I was married there. All West Virginians love John Denver's song "Take Me Home, Country Roads." West Virginians understand the words of that song better than anyone else.

Australia has over 500 national parks and over 28 million hectares of land is designated as national parkland. This is nearly 4% of our total land area. Yellowstone National Park was the first in the world and the Royal National Park in Australia was the second and was proclaimed on 26 April 1879. They are certainly a wonderful resource.

I didn't realize that there are that many national parks in Australia, but it's a huge country, so I'm not surprised. Yes, Yellowstone National Park, which I have had the pleasure of visiting was the first in the world and now many countries have National Parks, which I think is wonderful.
We also have hundreds of State Parks. All are well managed and beautiful to visit.

@IreneVincent Some of ours would be small and possibly almost touching others with a different name.

@TheInvisibleMan Our state motto is: "Virginia is for Lovers" What that means is whatever you love, you can find it in Virginia. If you love the mountains, the beaches, amusement parks, Civil War and Revolutionary War Historical sites, Presidential mansions, plantations, museums, art, music, theater, good food, lakes, rivers, state and National parks, and many other things. Virginia has it all.

And I want to visit Oregon. It is one of the few states that I have not been able to visit. I was in Northern California for a couple days and I should have driven over the border into Oregon but I didn't.
