What a show off

I came across this white peacock while walking around a nature preserve in Nassau Bahamas. There were other colored peacocks all around but none seemed to want to show off but this one. It is the first time I had come across a white peacock. However, they are not really showing off or being vain - even though that would be OK - but instead fanning their feathers in this way is a ritual designed to attract a mate. Of course I didn't see any potential mates around at this time but I guess one could show up at any time. Ah! the lengths members of all species go to attract the opposite sex.

He's beautiful! I've seen white peacocks, but not pure white like that one.
Our local zoological sanctuary has five peacocks that roam the grounds, and no peahens. Every year they strut around showing their stuff... I love photographing them around this time of year, when their breeding plumage is fully grown in. By the end of the summer they'll start dropping their tail feathers, and the kids will insist on bringing more of them home to add to our growing collection of peacock feathers.

So that is where the peacock feathers come from. Never saw them actually shedding their feathers.

@Freelanzer Yep, we have an assortment in all sorts of different lengths that we've collected over the years. The sanctuary is really generous when it comes to letting visitors keep them.

You are so fortunate that you were able to see it. We have the other peacocks roaming around but I have yet to see them in that pose.

I love peacocks when they are shimmering their beautiful feathers like that. You managed to get a great photo there!

Vince has some stunning photos of a conventionally-coloured peacock displaying his finery. Two females were attracted and they both fanned their tails too which was interesting. One then chased the other away. Obviously she wasn't happy to share.

This is the first time I have ever seen a white peacock, he is so beautiful!! I wonder if a peahen would choose him over one with colors? Thank you for showing us!

@paigea we sure did except it was windy and a bit cool the first few days so the beach was out but there is a lot of interesting things to do and see.
