THE DAYS OF THEIR LIVES.

Soap stars spend many days of their lives with the TV family , and I have often wondered if their real family life is affected, - or if it is as exciting as some of the scenarios we see on TV. Some of those soap operas run for decades and it is hard to imagine that these actors and actresses actually have a different life - they grow old on the show and die on the show. The soap - "Days of Our Lives" has been around for over fifty years. I started watching soaps about twenty years ago - then I was hooked on "The Young and The Restless" but I have stopped because I simply do not have the time. Do you watch soap operas? - and which is your favorite?

@Kandae11 I know why they were canceled and it's a long and complicated answer. ABC simply didn't want them anymore and used subterfuge to get them off the air.

@JohnRoberts Okay - but I am almost sure money could be part of the reason.

I do not watch soaps for the time factor. I just can't watch something every day. I have a life!

@Kandae11 Now that is smart as on the weekend we have time to watch something interesting and those soaps can suck one in.

That is one reason I gave them up. I now look at one which shows only on weekends.

I used to watch the Bold and the Beautiful and then lost interest. I also watched a few episodes of Desperate Wives

I also lost interest in the Bold and the Beautiful - I was not happy with the direction the storyline took. I did not like the idea of Brooke and Ridge being a couple.

They are about real life situations though. Why I no longer watch them - (except one which comes on once a week) is because I find I get too absorbed in their lives and neglect mine.

@Kandae11 the most popular one here used to clash with Star Trek and in pre-video days my parents always wanted the soap on so I often missed out

@arthurchappell I understand, -- naturally you would have preferred to be watching Star trek.

I do watch soaps. I used to watch Days of Our Lives, but quit watching it years ago. I used to watch As the World Turns and Guiding Light when they were still on the air. The only ones I still watch are The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, yet they sometimes get boring so I take a break from them.

@Kandae11 I do that too with the soaps. At the moment, I'm taking a break from The Bold and the Beautiful because it's getting too ridiculous.

I used to take a break when I wasn't happy about the way the story was going.

"Like sand through the hourglass , so are the days of our lives" - those are words from the theme tune of that soap.

Yes i watch soap operas. I still watch Young and the Restless - the longest and more recently The Bold and the Beautiful. They were actually interviewing a soap opera star who said they love it because it gives them a lot of flexibility and time for family - it is like a 9-5 job.

When All My Children closed i stopped watching soaps. i had been hooked since my first born - taking care of baby and being quiet got me into soaps...I watched several for a while and finally just All my Children....When I stopped i felt a freedom and realized just how much time I spent in front of the TV.

You are so right - if you are not careful soaps can take over your life.

Yes, but in their case, they are acting out families - like husband, wife, children.

I don't watch Days of Our Lives/The Young And The Restless all the time. I'm like you, no time for them. In Australia we have Neighbours and Home And Away. These two shows have been on TV since 1980s. In my opinion, they should end long time ago so people can have good memories about them.

On those very long running shows I wonder if the actors think of their real families enough, - if their TV spouses don't die or find someone else - they grow old together on the show.

I don't but I did watch Days of Our Life 40 years ago when I was home with young children. My favorite, however, was "Another World"
