My Main Site Was Attacked

I've been in a fog fighting technical issues for the past three days. At 1:30 Friday morning I was trying to save a post on my most profitable blogging site. Instead I got a message saying that my site was inaccessible due to CPU time overage and too many account executions. What a shock to get just as I was about to go to bed. I couldn't wait until morning to tackle this problem. After getting almost no help from the tech support person at my web host except that he thought upgrading to a more expensive plan would fix it, I was in despair. He had led me to believe the site would probably be back up in about an hour, but it wasn't. Instead I got an email that indicated it wouldn't be back up for another day. This was unacceptable. I called tech support again hoping I'd get someone else and I did. He helped me get the site back up and change some settings to facilitate less use of resources. It was thought that someone had been trying to hack my site or that rogue bots had been crawling it using too many resources. Now I'm almost afraid to work on the site myself for fear of using resources. I optimized some plugins for tighter security and I hope I'm good now. Because of these problems I only got about 4 hours sleep on Thursday night (or should I say Friday morning?) Technical emergencies always seem to come at a very inconvenient time and true emergencies have to be dealt with quickly. The biggest problem I have is that I know so little about what goes on in the background. I just want to type, upload photos, proofread, optimize for SEO and post. What happens on my server is a big mystery to me, and so is fixing problems on the server. I finally decided today to upgrade my Yoast SEO plugin to fix some problems I don't know how to fix and that would take me a lot of time. One of those is making all kinds of redirects to dead links that people still search for that are from an older version of the site. I also need to talk to Yoast tech support about a Google problem. I somehow managed to verify a page on a fairly new site with the code from a different page and I have no idea of how to fix that. I need my brain rewired. Now you have some idea of why I've been less active this past two days. I have a lot of technical fires to put out and I'm also still up to my ears in the book removal project. Are you currently trying to solve a challenging problem?

I've opened an Etsy store...I don't have a clue what I'm doing so mostly I'm winging it. I can usually figure things out as I go.

I wish you well with that. I'm thinking of listing on eBay again once I have a place to process shipping again and the taxes, which we haven't started on yet, are finished and to the accountant.

@bagarad our taxes were completed about three weeks ago and my husband has his overpayment in his hands. I paid none...got none back.

@Morleyhunt I doubt if we'll get anything back. They don't withhold anything to give us back.

This seems a normal situation for websites and here is a link that explains a bit of it.

@bagarad The reason is being pointed out to 'executions' as they call them

Thanks. I will look this over. I have an ebook from my site host, too, that I need to read.

@allknowing What I need to know is if it's something I'm doing or something someone else is doing. I'm not sure what executions are except that they are executing my web site.

That sounds like so much to process my head would be spinning and I would be crying. I really hope you can get it all straightened out!

My head is spinning and I tend to want to shout at someone rather than cry. It seems so unfair that these crooks create so much havoc. I'm still working on prevention to keep this from happening again.

This sounds a nightmare. I would have no idea where to even start with something like this. Good luck with it.

I'm holding my breath. So far today, so good. And I did get some sleep last night.

Yes I am. I am thinking if I will continue to write and share in facebook group. I feel I am needing something more, with writing.

Do you mean you are thinking of dropping one or more FB groups?

Sorry to hear this. But yes, upgrading to HTTPS is the best answer.

I'm afraid all my links would break if I did this. I don't collect any private information or credit card numbers, and I don't have other users who would need to log in.

@AkoPinay I haven't had time to move my BlogJob posts to my own sites yet. I have too many sites to handle now. You can't monetize Wordpress.com, and what you can do there is limited. As far as free sites go, I prefer Blogger.

@bagarad Oh I haven't used WP.org maybe it is more complicated compare to Blogger.com and WP.com upgrades. When I switched my Blogger blog to HTTPS I could only insert HTTPS links also. With WP.com I could insert any links. You remind me of what happened to BlogJob. I read that amazon affiliate links didn't work after switching to HTTPS but it is fixed now.

I currently have error son my new hosted site. I have no clue how to fix them right now. This is my first hosting and domain. I am learning as I go. Not an easy task. I wish I would have waited before going live.

If I were to make a wild guess, it's probably a ddos or ddos attack, I'm not very knowledgeable on this matter but just to give you an idea, perhaps you can look for a solution following this lead but again I am just guessing. Good luck to you.
DDoS (distributed denial of service) is an attack where multiple compromised systems are used to target a single system causing a DoS attack.

I think that's what it might have been. It is tought to defend agaisnt it, but I optimized my WordFence settings to try to foil some of these bad guys.

I'm sorry to hear that Barbara. I can't even imagine what you're going through, but I do understand the lack of sleep. I tend to get in a terrible panic if anything goes wrong with my computer or the sites I use and hate to log off leaving a problem unsolved. It's awful that the first person at tech support was so unhelpful. Unfortunately the world is full of people like that. I'm glad you found someone who was able to give you the help you needed though. I hope this is the end of the problem.

I hope so, too. Most of the techs I talk to at my host are very helpful. This is the first one in over a year of hosting that was not.

Of course, "upgrading to a more expensive plan" would fix it! That's exactly what they want you to do. Throw more money at them. I'm still very limited on time, so I have none to spend on technical issues, especially when I have no idea how to handle them. I'm like you. I just want to create the content and have everything else "just work". Hope you get some good technical support and everything works out easily and quickly.

My resources have held out today so far. I have been working on my site most of the day and its still up. There were still too many executions, but they did not shut me down.
