Part of the Solution

I've noticed that a lot of my friends have copied and pasted a remark about how the National Endowment for the Arts budget, under the microscope and possibly the federal axe in the proposed budget, is a measly $148 million. Someone in Indiana got more than that with a lottery victory last month. In comparison, the oft-copied post says, security for the president's residence is $184 million. I'm not much on copying and pasting things like that. To me, all it proves is that you know how to copy and paste. I opt to be part of the solution. Public broadcasting is also in danger of having funds "cut" (understand the definition of "cut" in government speak: if you were going to get a 6% increase and instead you only get 4%, that's a cut). My piddly post on Facebook wouldn't do anything (especially since my posts are restricted to being seen only by my friends), so why complain? Instead, I increased my donation to my favorite public radio station by 50%. The statistic is that public broadcasting gets $1.64 per person. So everyone who enjoys PBS should send $10, and that'll cover themselves and the people who don't watch or listen. See, it's easy to complain. It's harder to actually do something about it....especially when it involves opening your checkbook. I support public broadcasting because mainstream, commercial radio and TV just won't play this:
Jason Isbell makes his Austin City Limits debut on January 11th on PBS. Check your local PBS listings for dates and times in your area. For more visit acltv.com

The beef over taxpayer dollars going to public broadcasting isn't about Downton Abbey fare which we all enjoyed but the blatant one sided political nature of many of its programming. If public broadcasting and NPR remained neutral in its content or demonstrated balance, there wouldn't be a brouhaha.

Good for you. And you're right, opening the checkbook can take real effort. Our ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) is facing cuts too.
