A woman in Twin Falls, Idaho, was charged with vehicular homicide for killing a firefighter and leaving the scene. She plead guilty to reduced charges - felony and misdemeanor. The firefighter was riding a bike when he was hit. The driver claims she fell asleep and woke up when she heard a thud but left when she saw nothing.
She got an interesting sentence; 90 days in jail, 7 years probation and she must now pay court order child support the the victim's widow. The victim had four children. Wouldn't it be great if justice worked this way all the time? Instead of locking someone away for a long time, under certain circumstances like this one, instead make them support the victims of the crime. What are your thoughts?

I think its better to make her pay for everything than let her rot in jail doing nothing. The kids should be the priority first.

Agree. It may even help her feel better about the whole thing

@Freelanzer Yes. That would be good too. She would atleast ease her conscience a bit.

I am hoping the judge took into account her financial situation and ability to pay.

good that such an arrangement was possible - a prison sentance for the driver would have left the family of the victim with nothing

It is a settlement I am sure she agreed to otherwise she would be locked away for a long time.

I'm surprised I didn't hear about this on our local news. The Spokane news usually covers much of Idaho.
In a way one can feel sorry for this woman if her story is true. However, if she was that tired she had no business being behind the wheel. By the time it was discover who the driver of the car was it was probably too late to tell if the woman had been drinking when the accident happened. Hopefully the woman can pay child support for the next 18 years or so. I'm guessing the judge would not have given her that punishment if he felt she couldn't pay.

Even if her story was true, she did leave the scene of an accident. Colliding with someone on a bike would cause quite an impact. Perhaps if she had stopped and investigate d the victim may be alive today

@RichardMeister I guess she is the only person who knows what really happened.

@Freelanzer Personally I don't think her story is true. It's more likely she had been drinking and knew she would be in big trouble if they discovered that.
However, if her story was true and she got out and looked around and didn't see anything she could have figured she hit a deer or a moose but didn't kill it and it ran off. Or she could have hit the bike in such a way he flew off and missed the car and there was very little damage done to the car. Or she could have figured she hit something in the road like a wooden box and knocked it out of sight. Most people don't call the cops if they hit a wild animal or an object in the road unless their car is not drivable. If she didn't see anything how could she know it was a hit and run? Not everything a car hits is a person or another vehicle.

i agree with the sentence of giving financial support to the victim's widow and children. when a child is a victim here, the suspect has to pay for the future of the child. for example, the suspect has to pay the educational fees, and also the work or profession he has to take. it is because the suspect killed the future of the victim

I think it is much better than having to spend a long time in jail

@Freelanzer i agree, but is the suspect well-off and can pay the damages incurred with the accident she did to the firefighter?
