You might have already guessed that Charles Joseph Bonaparte is in some way related to Napoleon Bonaparte and you would be correct. He was the grandnephew of Napoleon.
However, he has another claim to fame. Charles Joseph Bonaparte was the attorney general under President Theodore Roosevelt and he was also the FOUNDER of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation.)

The American branch of the Bonaparte family is something interesting. He was the grandson of Jérôme Bonaparte and Elisabeth Patterson. Napoleon never approved their marriage and canceled it. The family of Jérôme is actually the head of the Bonaparte family and would be the ruling imperial family ; the American branch, that is disappeared now, was authorized by Napoleon III to wear the name Bonaparte but not to take part to the imperial succession.

@IreneVincent Yes, you should, it is a love story with not a happy end because of Napoleon. He removed Jérôme from the succession during a few years and forbid to his American wife to land with him in France and she was also refused to land in the Netherlands. She finally gave birth to their child in England and returned in the USA. Napoleon did the same with his brother Lucien, but Lucien refused to leave his wife and he has been removed from the imperial succession.

That is an odd bit of trivia. Jerome must have emigrated to escape Napoleon's disapproval.
