Today several of us at work, our hallway custodian, a couple of my teaching colleagues, and our assistant principal were talking about the state of public education in America - and around much of the world - and decided the best metaphor (I think it's a metaphor, but then again, I'm a math teacher) for our school was that of a sinking ship getting repeatedly struck by torpedoes. The torpedoes are being fired by parents, students, the Republican State Legislature, the new Secretary of Education, and the media. Every time we begin to think we've plugged one of the holes from the last torpedo, another one comes cruising in and damages us further. We're sinking faster than we can bail the water out. Is it any wonder so many teachers are deciding to abandon ship? Do you ever feel this way at work?

It's no surprise at all but it doesn't augur well for education in the future.

Both sides of the political spectrum want to destroy what we have now. The argument between them is over what to replace it with.

No I'm not feeling any torpedoes, just feeling unappreciated, and when I make a mistake I feel rather useless..

@DWDavis Yeah, I don't work in education, and I'm glad of that! I never liked dealing with kids very much.. half the time I can't even stand dealing with other adults!

@katsmeow1213 If my wife has her way, I won't be working in public education much longer.

We public educators sank way below feeling unappreciated a long time ago. Now we are openly disrespected and disdained by a certain demographic of students and their parents. Republican lawmakers also go out of their way to make us feel worse than useless.

You deal with some of the same aspects of modern lack of culture and civility we do. I imagine some of your tenants are carbon copies of some of the parents we deal with.

If the USS Education sinks, the whole damn fleet goes down with it.

I've worked a couple jobs where I felt like I was working on a sinking ship.

I'm having a hard time right now trying to decide if I should keep bailing, just tread water, or abandon ship.

@DWDavis - A lot of the trainers I've had at corporate jobs were former teachers.
