Our next stop was Roswell, New Mexico. I guess I was disappointed. I must have expected to see UFO's parked all over and aliens in every store. There was a museum and we found time to go there. One thing about traveling with the carnival there was little time to sightsee. But, it turned out that it was my birthday and so we all went out to the Pink Squirrel to celebrate. Lots of fancy drinks and dancing as I recall. One waitress, trying to get through the crowd with a load of drinks and my one in flames, some of the alcohol spilled on her arm and it caught fire for a few seconds. I was a bit tipsy and overly emotional. I burst into tears things she was going to get burned. Nope! Went out in just a few seconds. El Paso, Texas was our next stop. Heat again. So hot during the day we usually didn't go to the lot until 5p. or 6p. There is a certain type of joint/game that is more for adults. A numbers game and they called it a 'flat store'. Two older men played one for this show. One of these older men took a fancy to me. Started stopping by my joint and kept asking me out. Finally I excepted. Lunch the next day down over the border into Mexico. I pleaded with my friend to go with me. She finally said she would. We drove in an air conditioned car across the border into a small, dirty town in Mexico. I remember being so thirsty when we got there that he stopped at a bar. We go inside and order sodas. I recall the black and white tile floor and some man standing close by at the bar spitting on those tiles. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Then we went to a glass blowing factory. On the we drove by this ancient church they were renovating. Looked like it was about to topple. The glass factory was very interesting. Hot but interesting. We watched as a glass blower took out of a furnace a cylinder of glass and began to blow it. He added something and the color changed. At the end of the blowing process there was a lovely vase. Then we went to a little canteen or restaurant where he ordered lamb, butterflied shrimp, salad and iced tea. What a lovely meal it was. He was very nice and we had a good time. My first time in Mexico.
