Hidden Treasures

When people talk about traveling and visiting great attractions there are certain popular places that come to mind immediately like the Grand Canyon, Great Wall of China or the Egyptian Pyramids. These are certainly wonderful places to visit and see...though I admit I have never seen them in person. I just can imagine that they are quite mind boggling. At the same time there are a lot of places that may not be so overwhelming but quite pleasant to visit yet most people are unaware of them. They are hidden treasures. For example, I am originally from Jackson, Michigan and our city offered an attraction called the "Cascades". It is a man made waterfall and during the summer evenings it is lit up with colorful lights and flows to the sound of programmed music. The lights constantly change colors as the appearance of falls synchronizes with the music. I included a link below so that you may take a look at the Jackson Cascades. Another place I visited that not as many people may have heard of is the Wisconsin Dells. It is a very beautiful area (especially in the fall) with a lovely river and a ton of things to do. I'm sure there are many, many places that are not advertised much but are amazing places to see offering wonderful experiences. If you know of such a place, would you mind sharing so I can add to my bucket list the places I would like to visit some day?

While I haven't been to the Wisconsin Dells, I have been to the Cascades in Jackson, and they certainly are a site to behold! The picture doesn't do them justice....much prettier when there! Another "hidden treasure" is, or was, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, especially in the fall when the leaves are turning colors! I say "was" because I read a news article that said Gatlinburg was completely destroyed by wildfire a few months back. Does anyone out there know whether or not that article was true, or if it was "fake news" that was going around? Would certainly be a shame if all those beautiful, mountain foliage were destroyed!

Gatlinburg did indeed have a terrible fire and with a great deal of damage. It is another place I have wanted to visit and have not had the opportunity.

@Jon2071 So sorry to hear that Gatlinburg was, indeed, destroyed. I'm sorry you missed it, as it will be a very long time before trees can regrow to that majestic beauty once again!

Our 'hidden treasures' are all in Australia but you are quite right. There are lots of beautiful places right under our noses sometimes.

True and some places may not be as majestic, but still provide their own unique pleasure though not as grand as some of the major tourist attractions.

A man-made waterfall? Pish! Hamilton (where I live) has 105 natural ones.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Webster's Falls The city of Hamilton in Ontario, Canada is home to more than 100 waterfalls and cascades, most of which are on or near the Bruce Trail as it winds through the Niagara Escarpm

I know, I know. Man made cannot compare to natural, but still, if you are unable to travel to see the natural ones then the man made ones will have to do and they can provide a certain amount of beauty and pleasure too. I lived in Western Virginia for awhile and nothing man made could compare to what I saw in the mountains.

I'm sure there is a great deal of beauty in Australia. I always wanted to visit your country if I could ever have enough money.
