Sock Lint

I wore green socks for St Patrick's Day. When I took them off, I notice that my toes were covered in green lint. Now, these are not new socks, or fluffy socks. I've worn and washed them many times before. I have dark pink and turquoise socks of the same ilk and vintage. Neither of them has left lint on my feet.
So, where did the lint come from? Was it really leprechaun gold and I failed to recognize it?

From the washer? I don't think so, it was the same bright green as the socks. Machine lint tends to be a nothing kind of grey.

We have known this to happen a time or two before. It is not fun and we have noticed this with older socks as well. I wonder if maybe if for some reason if you feet sweat some or get damp?

That's as good an explanation as any. Thanks.
