A very clever cursed treasure map story. Two explorers in Yucatan discover a map pointing to underwater treasure, mostly consisting of gold. One explorer want to send the map to a museum, but the other kills him, throws his corpse in the sea and goes diving to claim the gold for himself.
The body of the murdered man keep turning up to haunt him, but he finds a Mayan temple full of gold. The temple also carries a traditional threat of watery doom that the killer chooses to ignore with scorn. It also talks of no longer needing air to breathe underwater, and the killer finds that he can now breathe underwater.
Alas, he can no longer breathe air, so he is turning into a hideous fish beast, with all the gold useless to him away from land and the corpse of his old friend forever following him round.
Fishy business and a punishment richly deserved.

How interesting. Sounds like the author gave this one some thought.
