Lore has it that this was originally 'In the Garden of Eden', but the singer slurred the words when telling the drummer the title, and it stuck.
Clocking in at over 17 minutes, and taking up the entire second side of the album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is, undoubtedly, Iron Butterfly's most famous song.
'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' was heavily the inspiration for part of the organ solo, although I don't find this mentioned anywhere...however, with Doug Ingle's father being a church organist, the influence is understandable.
This is also the first album to ever receive a 'Platinum' award from the R.I.A.A. (sales of 1,000,000 copies). *Note - this is NOT the first million selling record...record companies used to award artists gold records for 1,000,000 units sold...the R.I.A.A. (Recording Industry Association of America) began issuing gold records for $1,000,000 in sales and platinum for 1,000,000 units sold.

I have always loved that song! The 60s were so great for good music. I had a chance to see Iron Butterfly once. My then husband bought us tickets and we went expecting to see them but they never showed and never even notified the venue. Instead, we got War and that was fantastic! They really put on a great show. This was in the late 90s or early 2000s. We were actually glad for the substitution later, War is just such a killer band.

What can you say? (Well, "Dang, that's a long song!" notwithstanding.
) I remember back when they'd play this -- all of it -- on the radio.
