I love looking at old barns so I was thrilled to learn that some people actually modify them into living structures. Check out the awesome article in the link below.
I would be thrilled to live in one.
What is your opinion on it? Would you live in a modified barn?
My only hesitation would be - is there a way to clean the smell out?
An old barn is not exactly the picture of a cozy and glamorous family home but you would be surprised to see how spectacular transformations can be. There

@CoralLevang Barns are beytter for me. Log houses lokk like they might be the home of some spiders. But I checked the barns and they have all I want and more. The only problem is that I don´t have the money to buy one.

Oh, I wish I could think of it, but there is a show on some cable channel about people who bought and restored old barns into their current homes. On each episode they spotlight a different place, showing the before and after, and talking about the history. It's such a great idea.

@FayeHazel So I got two shows confused, but I found one of the ones I was thinking of, it's called Barn Hunters. They turn old barns into homes for people. Barn Hunters...why couldn't I have remembered something so simple?! I'll keep looking for the other one I saw...

SO beautiful isn't it? I would love such a home. You're probably right - in all of the renovating the soiled or smelly parts probably get covered up or super cleaned

I would love to live on one especially if it would just be given free including the funds and furniture to restore it

@FayeHazel and maybe it would also depend on who you would be living in the barn with
, there is no use enjoying it while the person you want to share it with wants out

Ah yes -- if money were no issue that would be nice. I imagine modifying the barn takes a lot of money and effort

Yes, there is a way to clean the smell out of a barn. Fresh air. Just like a dirty house, air does the trick in time.

The simplest explanation is usually the best. However I remember being in my friend's barn - up in the loft area - smelled strongly of ammonia, even though she doesn't keep many animals any more.... maybe it's something particular to that barn though

Once flooring, insulation and interior walls are added, I don't think there would be any smell @FayeHazel .

@FayeHazel Yeah, just scooping and eliminating the hay doesn't stop the urine from penetrating the ground. Sometimes using sawdust will absorb the urine.

Ah that's a good thing too - because I was in my friend's barn ( still a barn) and while the inside was pretty - it was smelled strong of ammonia

I have not actually seen a barn. However, I understand that it is used to store grains and such thing. I would not like to stay in it even it is a modified barn.

@FayeHazel It would give me a odd feeling if I need to stay in a barn, where cattle used to stay.

Wow, really? There are many here. Some of the newer ones are boring looking, but old ones can be quite charming. You're right - grain storage and animal housing, usually. In my area most of them were/are used for cattle.

I think it would kind of depend on how much it cost to heat it. You are talking about a lot of floor space there. I used to love one of the apartments my sister lived in though..it was like the top floor of a farmhouse, and had all these nooks and crannies..it was so cool!

Did you mean the smell bit - seriously ?
I can understand that -- there a "barn" smell that is like old wood, hay, dust, air, even slight animal dander.... that's not too bad.
My friend's barn however smells strong of ammonia :-/

I think I can't.
