Word and home of the day : Quonset

Another structure I love is a Quonset.  What is a Quonset you ask?  They are plentiful around here in this farming community.  It's a long, domed, metal shed.  I like how they look, and I like the word.  I have seen one retro-fitted into a gas station, but I would love to live in one that has been adjusted into a house.  To my knowledge this hasn't been done.  According to this link, the Quonset house is a reality.  Someone beat me to it, alas.
While walking around Catalina Island, we found a group of Quonset Houses! They were still going strong after all these years! Subscribe and check out Quonset...

Military bases often have these for housing and storage. We notice some farms have such buildings as well.

@FayeHazel They do just seem to make sense in many areas.

@PatZAnthony I hope my idea for refitting them into homes will catch on :-)

We had similar structures here. They were called Nissan huts. They were prefabricated metal huts used in migrant camps after WW2. Later they were sold off and one was fitted out as a house on a farm my parents later purchased

@FayeHazel It was a long time ago. It was fitted out quite nicely but the outside was just half a tin cylinder with two doors and some windows.

Oh that's so cool. I will look up Nissan hut. Do you have any pictures of the one that got made into a house? What was it like inside?

The one they pictured here is so small. The only thing I can think is that they must come in different sizes. The ones in my area are huge --- long structures

We don't need a big place, but that looks kind of small.

I know, that got to me too - I'm used to seeing them as great huge structures. These look small.

I worked in Cananda for a while and was almost tripping over Qunonsets. They were everywhere! You even find the odd one here

@FayeHazel I was at Goose Bay in the middle of nowhere. Loved it, but it was summer!

Oh that is so cool. Maybe it's a regional thing - I'm in Minnesota - neighbors with Canada. How did you like Canada?

A new word for me! Although I am certain I've seen them (not around here though), I didn't realize there was a term for it. But I can't recall where I have actually seen them! Interesting they are on Catalina Island . . . we've been there too, but didn't take note of them (there are a lot of cute little places out there). I wonder if it gets too hot or too cold in there ...

@FayeHazel If only we could get to all the ins and outs of this planet in our lifetime - that would be quite a feat! I actually have a friend who is trying to do that - seriously, he travels all around the world and experiences so much - it's his passion! Catalina is a cute island, but I heard they were having trouble for a bit with the drought - not sure how things are currently. That's where we got married .

I like the shape of such buildings, but I also like the word, as funny as that seems. :-)

If they do not come with enough windows, I won't like them.

I agree. I like a lot of natural light - but with such large walls I think it would be easy to cute some windows in. Maybe even some skylights.
