What Does It Mean To you?

I went to a shop to buy something. The cashier asked me if I want a bag. 'If I can please'. I replied. After paying for my item she gave it to me with the receipt, but no bag. I looked at her and asked her if I could have a bag to put my item in. She took a bag, gave it to me without saying anything. On the way out I kept thinking to myself. Did I say it wrong? Yes, she had to give me a bag to put my item in. No, she didn't have to. What do you think? Does she need to provide me a bag with the reply I gave her or she doesn't have to?

She should have put your purchase in a bag. You shouldn't have had to ask for a bag. She was being rude in my opinion. You don't or said nothing wrong.

I would have taken your reply to mean that you'd like a bag.

@atoz1to10 Yeah me too. And I want to share this with you about the cashier and the manager. The manager kept on scolding and talking bad words with a loud voice to the cashier in the center of the crowd. The cashier kept on crying in front of us. I dont know the reason why, what do you think?

I'm not sure but the way you said it, it seems that you have given her a choice that she didn't need to give you a bag and its up to her. Maybe its just a misunderstanding.

Yes, that was what I think too. I know I wanted one, but I didn't want to bother her so I replied in a polite way, but then it was interpreted the other way...

@diosabella Thank you... I think I will remember it next time. And you are correct about cashiers these days, they look like they dont want to be at their workplace at all... How sad.
1 May 17
@atoz1to10 Better just say directly yes. A lot of people now doesn't bother with politeness anymore. A lot of cashiers or baggers now have the same look of lifelessness. They will just grunt at your thank you. But I still say thank you because I'm grateful.

really? I remember a few years ago when we tried to save Earth... most of the shops didnt give out bags, and if you needed one you had to buy it, but not sure why bags are free again... Maybe we don't care about Earth any more?? or too much complain from customers??

The cashier may have been tired (or cranky), but I think you said it right. It is much harder to understand what to say about the bags where I live now that we have a law that they have to charge for them. I will not pay for a bag either.

Years and years ago we did...but then they give us free bags again. People only want to save Earth when they have to pay for the bags, but when bags are free...no one seems to care about Earth any more..
