has there been any occasion when your certain discussion turned into argument and then full fledged personal attack? or have you witnessed any such fight between other twos? I at one time was very close to such eventuality but applying my sense I retreated from the border and disappeared far away from my virtual potential enemy?

a lot, and it's can be embarrassing or horrible to witness.
if you feel you or someone else were being attacked, you can flag the discussion, response, or comment so admin can handle it.

Sometimes it turns into a personal attack. We should be quite cautious about that.

I've had LOADS of arguments on mylot
Mainly on the old site though as admin steps in way faster now.
