*Bleeding sores.

My sister learned that AN died in the hospital yesterday at 4:30AM not due to complications of the cervical cancer that she had, but due to the bleeding decubitus ulcers that were left untreated and cleaned by her family.
It is a common complication of bed-ridden people to have decubitus ulcers, or pressure ulcers, or more commonly known as bed sores, because these people prefer not to move or turn from side to side. Having soaked diapers is also a reason for the sores. And usually bed sores appear in the bony prominence at the back, like in the lumbar and sacral areas.
AN’s common-law husband stayed by her side, but her children, whom she often told us that she loves them so dearly, did not watch her in the hospital, according to our neighbors. I could say that her children are ingrates, and maybe, they will have disagreements as to who should hold the money given by those who sympathize with them.
Rest in eternal peace, my friend AN. Please say HELLO to my parents in heaven.

Terrible shame that.
Condolonces to all concerned at this very difficult time.
My Gran had bed sores but it was the head injury that killed her.

She was pushed over on a Bus and I struggled through a crowd of rude people to get to her underneath and through their legs.
A year later she was gone.
She suffered a big blow on the head but then there were no check ups like now.

Well because she was being pushed onto the Bus by the people behind her and I was furious and trying to stop them pushing her.
I was very small but I knew that it was not good what was happening.
This was ages ago now.
They did no scans then if you suffered a blow on the head.

@ridingbet wow. That is horrible. And inconceivable to me. How could someone treat their own mother this way?

yes my friend. her daughters did not care for her, and they acted as if their mother did not need help. they thought AN can take care of herself.
her daughters, i see them sometimes, always go out wherein they go to the city and gallivant.

@ridingbet I agree that are busy. Personally I think having a mom is the greatest gift for anybody to have. Once she is gone you lose something precious. Mothers do so much for their children. So many sacrifices. I feel.sorry for you friend

yes, her children were not with her during daytime. her oldest works in the capital city. her 2 other children always go out to the city, and sometimes go to school, but the thought that nobody was with their mother is disappointing.

@ridingbet When my sister in law was hospitalized for many weeks, they have moved her to a water bed when they noticed a beginning of pressure ulcers. She was fine after she was moved to the water bed, she was hospitalized for 3 months.

@LadyDuck pressure sores are also found in extremely emaciated patients, because they have no fats in their bony prominence. that is why waterbeds are better, and also changing positions side to side every 2 hours, and dry back with application of talcum powder can also prevent decubitus.

our hospital here have no water beds, but the nurses and the significant others of the clients should be in charge in turning the clients side to side every 2 hours to prevent decubitus ulcers.

I hope she rest in peace. My grandmother would have suffered bed sores in her days if it wasn't for my Aunt's persistence that she gets going for a few minutes a day. And everyday too, my cousin stretched her body and massage her legs for circulations. It could be really painful to see when someone can't move because of too much pain.

yes, and added to that, the mere thought that AN was in diapers and her children reasoned out that (when we asked if she wet her bed) even if she is full of urine, she wore diapers, is not acceptable to a health care procider like me.

@diosabella yes, diapers worn by bed-ridden patients do get some rashes from the soiled diapers with urine and poop, and it is not good too if it is not changed, and waiting for it to be heavy with pee.

@ridingbet We never used diapers ever. My Aunt didn't like it. She said its too hot for grandma and the rashes too is not good. It would be much a huge problem if she developed those. When grandma wet herself my Aunt just ask me to give grandma a quick warm shower and change her clothes. If its not possible we clean her using wash cloth. When we give my grandma a bath there's three of us. One will wash the hair and face, the other will wash the middle part of her body and the other one will be on duty with her legs and feet. And I think grandma loved the attention somehow.

It is obvious she was not taken care of, as bed rest if not watched will lead to these sores. Here they are made to sleep on water mattresses and they are made to change sides every now and then. They are also showered with talcum powder. May her sould rest in peace.

yes, persons who are on complete bedrest like those who have stroke or CVA, should always be turned to sides every 2 hours, and keeping the back dry with talcum powder, may not develop more ulcers to the skin.

Those pressure sores are so difficult to deal with.
My fathers venous stasis ulcer is a similar type of wound. He has a nurse at his home every other day to clean it and apply a fresh dressing. This has been ongoing since February.

by venous stasis ulcer, do you mean the wound is in his leg? if the ulcer has a weeping wound, it really needs to be cleaned and dressed everyday.

@ridingbet we fought for every other day. The normal protocol for his wound care is every third to fifth day. The every other day seems to be working.
The wound is slow in healing (not unexpected) but it is healing. He is 90 years old and has had a history of poor circulation in his legs. We watch it all very closely.

@Morleyhunt a healing ulcer should be treated, if possible, every other day, because we have to give the skin the time to have cell granulation.

Are here children already grown ups and working? Maybe they are busy at work, but that is not an excuse. They can take a leave of absence to take care of her. Or maybe they hired a caregiver for her.

yes, and i really wonder why her daughters did not care for her bed sores. maybe they felt icky cleaning the wounds, because the wounds were bleeding.
