I judge a book by it's cover.

I am sitting here looking through amazon at the moment. I use my kindle to read books, though I do have a nice shelf full of hardbound (and paperback) books as well. When I look through kindle, I first look at the title and then picture of the book. The title might grab me, but the picture doesn't always. I tend to rely more on the picture, but do sometimes go through to read the synopsis of the book. If the synopsis interests me, even if the cover does not, I'll purchase it or "borrow" it from KU. If the cover isn't all that appealing, but the title and synopsis has caught me, I will then look at the reviews. Reviews can be double edged. Sometimes they tell you a lot, and help you from wasting your time on a bad book. Other times the readers are prejudiced or too concerned with minor details. I tend to rely more on the star rating, even if the top reviews are reviews with fewer than three stars. How do you go about determining if a book is worth purchasing or "borrowing"? Do you judge a book by it's cover?

The title and cover is what captures my attention first, then I rely on the blurb to help me determine if I want to read the book.

Sometimes the "blurb" falls short but the book is excellent...

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's try. I've read blurbs where the book doesn't sound good, but once I read the story it's quite good.

I choose a book based on the blurb and the first page. The cover or title might initially grab me, but it's the first page which will determine if I borrow {I rarely buy a new book these days, and prefer real books to a Kindle or e-reader.}

It took me a long time to go from physical copies of books to an e-reader... Owning an e-reader has actually allowed me to read a lot more.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It probably would me, too. However, I like the physical aspect of enjoying a book nearly as much as reading the book!

Sometimes a cover can grab my attention.. but I normally only read books I've heard of, or authors I've heard of... or I'll go through and read a ton of books by the same author if I really like them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't read that much. Usually I have to be really interested in a book or series to bother picking it up.

I will also exhaust an author's existing books before going onto the next.. But when I find new authors, I tend to go through the steps I listed above... That is, if I haven't exhausted the "authors like..." section of amazon first.

Sometimes the first chapter grabs me but then subsequent chapters get boring... I don't watch much t.v. anymore.

I guess i do judge a book by it's cover when it's a new author, but if it's a author i am familiar with i will read there work regardless of the cover

Yes, my well loved authors could have a cover with no words or pictures, just their name, and I'd still atleast check the book out.

Perhaps we all do that somewhat and don't realize it @ScribbledAdNauseaum Usually a title will get me to at least look, then it will be details on the jacket.

No matter what the title or cover of a book is I always read the back cover, or if there is no text there, the beginning of the first chapter... As they say looks can be deceiving. Just because a cover is very appealing doesn't mean the story is. And just because the cover may not be that great doesn't mean the story is not. Plus, I can't know if I will like the book just based on the cover... Sometimes even a description or summary can't answer that. But I will say that a book with a beautiful, or eye-catching cover has a higher chance of being picked up and looked at than a cover that's not that great.

When it comes to physical books, I tend to pay more attention to the titles themselves. I haven't bought a new fiction book in years... I have re-purchased physical copies of books I have had in the past but had to get rid of...
