Class Field Trip

United States
May 10, 2017 3:55am CST
I had to get up extra early today to drop my 10 year old off at school. He had to be there at 4:30 in the morning as the entire 5th grade is taking a field trip today. They're going to New York City, which is about a 5 hour drive from here. Every year our school takes the entire 5th grade class, they started this tradition when my twins were in 5th grade.. that was 4 years ago. So they'll drive down to the city, see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, they'll drive through Times Square, then go see a Mets game. When the twins went they also visited Central Park but that is not on my 10 year old's itinerary. The twins also did not do the Mets game though, they went to the Natural History Museum instead.. So I can expect my son home around 11pm or midnight.. I'm sure I'll be asleep so hubby will be the one waiting up to pick him up. I sure hope he has a great day! This is a picture one of the twins took on their trip to NY..

Wow - that is an amazing 5th grade field trip! For that kind of distance and time, I thought they would surely be sleeping over! Yah, I'm sure all the kids will be snoring on the way back . Hope he had a great time!!

It's pretty much the only field trip they take all year. Actually these days kids don't seem to do many field trips at all anymore.

@JudyEv There are a lot of local things they can do, things I used to do when I was in school, like see a play at the Civic Center.. I think it's about the money.

@katsmeow1213 Maybe with all the worry about terrorism, it gets too hard to be worth the effort.

@katsmeow1213 We used to take our students on day long field trips. Exhaustion for teachers and kids, but such good fun.

They actually arrived at the Mets game very late and only got to see a couple innings. My son didn't care, he's not a huge baseball fan. The rest of the day was a lot of fun!

We did a similar trip but for 8th graders. We went to ground zero, the wax museum, some Italian/pizza place, took a night time dinner cruise around the statue of liberty.

@Courtlynn I have been twice.. the first time I was about 10 and the second time I was 18. I am planning to go again soon. Our Marching Band will go there in October and I might go with them as a chaperone.

I went away to camp for a couple years, but I was younger than 6th grade.. it was a lot of fun! I sent my older 3 off to a camp a few years ago. The boys loved it but my daughter wasn't crazy about it.

That's better than the field trips we had when I was a kid.

Yep, same here. Trips like this were offered, but not everyone could go, and most couldn't afford it. Our school works pretty hard to ensure the entire grade can go, and if someone can't afford the cost they only need to let the school know. When my twins went it was only $25 per student. Now that they've added a Mets game to their itinerary it cost $40 per student. Still not bad.
