One of the perks of paying a monthly subscription to go to the cinema is that occasionally we get to see films a week or so before their actual release date. Last night we were treated to King Arthur: Legend of the Sword {3D}.
Oh. My. Gosh.
I loved it.
I was expecting a humdrum run-of-the-mill tale, but who was I kidding? It is a Guy Ritchie film, after all. This version of King Arthur is a 1960s East Londinium gangsta movie meets contemporary British humour and style meets magical fantasy film.
The actress who played Morgana in Merlin appears briefly as Jude Law's wife, which confused my easily confuzzled mind quite spectacularly. The son of Back Lack is played by the kid who is Sharon Watt's son in EastEnders. I see more film roles in his future. And David Beckham!? Brilliant. I don't care what the critics may say, his brief appearance was super, and I'm not even a Beckham fan.
I don't think I've really seen Charlie Hunnam {Arthur} in anything since Queer as Folk very many years ago. Seeing him on screen again with Aiden Gillen made me giggle. You used to do lots of sex scenes together! the child in me laughed.
This film was so much more than I could have hoped for. Lots of eye-candy, an occasional injection of very funny - laugh out loud - humour, the clanging of metal, throat-slashing and death {but no blood or gore}, excellent effects, no ridiculous love story ... just a bunch of swashbuckling Dark Age heroes making England right again. This King Arthur is probably my most favourite in the history of all portrayals of King Arthur; he's how I want the real Arthur to have been, if indeed he ever existed.
And the Vikings were quite nice too.

I guess I need to pay attention more, because I didn't even know a new King Arthur movie was coming out! I'm also a big fan of King Arthur, so I will definitely go see it when it comes out!

It's not your typical King Arthur film, but it is brilliant.

No, can't say I've seen that. There were Vikings in the film. They wanted an army of boys. :)

@CRK109 Husband told me the critics hated it and I just thought, uhoh, some myLotter folk might go and see it on my recommendation and hate it, and then they'll hate me too ... I do think it is VERY British in its humour and style though, which may account for it not being well received on your side of the pond. It isn't released here until Friday.

@Poppylicious He certainly does! I wasn't surprised to read yesterday that the critics pretty much hate this movie. That means I will probably love it!

sounds fun - only aw the critics slating Beckham as if he's the only one in the film - do want to see this being an Arthur myself

Beckham's only in it for about five minutes. He wasn't perfect but the character suited him and I enjoyed him being there!

Merlin is mentioned {obviously} but not really seen. This film seems to be primarily about Arthur, but they do seem to have left it open for a second film.
