Recovery- Can Be a Long and Winding Road

With a hip operation there are so many things you have to be careful with after surgery. You're told not to cross your legs, twist your body, or bend too far. You also must always sit in a chair that keeps your hips above your knees- so no low toilets, chairs or comfy sofas. That said, I am allocated to a certain chair that is high enough and no other. So for a good month plus you are not going anywhere too far or for too long, (Unless you want to carry your built-up commode with you to your friend's or relative's) Plus- once there, you better have a walker to sit on or you might just end up on a chair that is too low and Lord knows- you could pop a hip! No- no visiting allowed for this reason.
Yes, it is a slow comeback and you do need certain furniture and equipment to keep the hip in place as it heals. Bowling, Fly Fishing, and Ballroom Dancing are definitely out. Your bedroom and the washroom and maybe that high chair with cushions on it in the living room become your little world, for at least 6 weeks. But you still have to watch all those body movements for 3 months and you can't stand for long. Hip precautions- they call them. You're walker becomes your best friend.
So, here I am almost a month in and things are getting better but all these rules and situations are a very big part of your life. Plus, I have to settle with easy to microwave dinners or my husband's cooking! No! anything but that!
Thank God, my daughter drops in now and then to rescue me with something she has made. He does try though, but how often can you have canned soup, chips, bacon and/or burgers. Oh well- only a few more weeks to go- and thank God for pre-packaged salads, etc. or I'm sure I would have scurvy---ha! (an old-time disease from lack of Vitamin C).
On a happy note- I am getting stronger- the surgeon said everything looks good so I am going to run--er should I say- push my walker- with that! ha!

As a skater, I've known a lot of people who've had hip operations - it is a big deal in recovery. What a relief to hear everything looks good and that you are indeed healing in the best possible way! I only had a split knee cap in a splint for almost 3 months - I cannot even compare it to a hip replacement - but I remember how there was so much to think about while waiting to heal!

I've heard that although it seems odd- and it is a bigger deal than a knee replacement- the hip is a little faster to heal- I wonder if it's because you don't bend the hip at all. :)

@MarymargII That may be. When I was finally able to be free, my knee was completely stiff from not being allowed to bend it for so long . . . I literally had to learn to walk again (sometimes my knee would give out - not in pain, but I just couldn't hold myself up). Do you feel "stiff" in the hip?

@much2say Yes but getting better when I remain in one position too long and have to build my weight bearing ability slowly- I am using a walker but may graduate to a cane as I tried it the other day and it wasn't bad.

Yes, at least I knew the ropes- although I did seem to need more meds this time. The pain seemed stronger at first but it is better now. So glad it's over and I don't have anymore hips--ha!

Patience while healing is very tough, I had to be diligent when I had upper spine surgery in 1996, I was in a neck brace for over 6 weeks and could not drive nor could I lay flat to sleep, if I had I would not be able to get up by myself and since I live alone that could not be allowed to happen.
It's nice to know you are healing and have a positive attitude which is half the healing meds you'll need.

Not worse @MarymargII just different. In my case it was the upper body while in yours it's the lower. It's the diligence while waiting to heal that gets ya, in your case not being able to actually sit down must be a real test of your patience right now. In my case at the time it was not daring to lay down for fear I wouldn't be able to get up, it all worked out ok though and hopefully your's will as well.

@rebelann So true and luckily I can sit down now- only as long as the seat is high to keep my hips far above my knees. How are you these days?

Getting stronger is a good thing! It can be a long road to recovery, but it sounds like you are well on your way @MarymargII

Wow- how long did it take for you to recover from that and what were the rules you had?

Lots of rules. I'm glad your hip is healing and you can get around better. I couldn't trust my husband's cooking either when we were married. He was great on the grill, but that was it. I'm glad your daughter rescues you once in a while.

Oh yes- or I ask him to buy some pre-packaged thing I can actually eat and is a little healthy- since he doesn't eat salads much.

It really takes time to recover from surgery. I had surgery May 11 last year. I could not climb upstairs for 2 months.
Take it slow. Everything will be okay.

@MarymargII if the pain is tolerable shun away from pain meds as much as possible

@Iam_jauntyjen Yes, I am trying to back off quite a bit- down to one to one and a half at night- and getting better. They are addictive so should be careful.

You are so right- the weakness and tiredness are also a side effect plus the pain meds can make you drowsy. I am now weaning myself off as they can be addictive.
