Diary 12th 13th and 14th May 2017

Diary Friday 12th May 2017 The increasingly routine job searching gave way to a very good public talk on the local history of the Ingol district of Preston where I live, presented by Dr Bill Shannon. I have seen this talk before but it was very nice and I got some fresh insight from it. There were donuts and cakes for the audience too. Diary Saturday 13th May 2017 I considered going out taking photos but the weather turned cold and wet so I had a day in, and more online job searching. In the evening I decided to watch the Eurovision Song Contest and simultaneously join in the commentary on it running live on Twitter which was hilarious. Our entry, which was pleasant but unmemorable came in 15th. Other presentation included a guy bizarrely singing in both soprano and baritone, yodelling, a man in a horse head sitting on a ladder, another man in a gorilla suit and people splashing around in a paddling pool. Also, it seems, as they now enter the contest, Australia is now part of Europe. The chap who jumped on stage to bare his buttocks was actually les cringe inducing than the three young white Caucasian presenters declaring this year’s contest was themed around social diversity. They were three of the worst stand-up comics ever. Truly excruciating. It was good that the often atrocious songs came on to deny them screen time. Diary Sunday 14th May 2017 The weather changed for the better so I did go out taking photos after the obligatory job search activity. Bus services are poor on Sundays so I only got a handful of pub signs, though I spotted a few areas worth revisiting soon, and I had a beer in Preston’s Hogarth’s Bar, decorated inside to resemble an 18th century gin palace. The Hogarth painting depicted here is a reproduction on display inside the pub. Arthur Chappell

On Facebook, Mick Mercer seemed to approve of this year's Eurovision winner, though. Didn't Roxy Music even enter one year?

@arthurchappell - I could swear I read that they'd entered a song one year back in the 80's.

Oh, how Eurovision made me giggle! I loved the Belgian entry. Hated the Portuguese. It was so mind-numbingly yawnifying. :)

@Poppylicious not sure what reasoning led to their victory - it is very bizarre

@arthurchappell I was trying to think of a reason why. Does Portugal have something the rest of Europe wants??

Our Entry meaning your country or group? The pub sounds interesting...French man's Creek type.

the entry for the UK who was a solo singer called Lucie Jones from Wales who sounded like an Adele tribute act but didn't do too bad - Portugal won. This was our entry

I love the painting and I can imagine how very different Hogarth's bar must look inside.

@Kandae11 Here is a photo of the interior - the painting itself dominates one wall

@Kandae11 that is a pub - it is a reconstruction of how the old real gin palaces looked and the pub does sell lots of specialist gins too

@arthurchappell It looks rather opulent. These bars are in hotels or are they similar to pubs?
