Don't wish me a "Happy Memorial Day"

One of the radio hosts I like to listen to has a friend, Burt Minor, who posted this on his Facebook page. It reflects how I feel about this "holiday". Americans have lost the meaning of this day thanks to the greed of many businesses and the greed of the mass media. I hope you will take this seriously and think about what Mr. Minor says: With all due respect to my friends with good intentions here are some ground rules for Memorial Day Weekend. 1. Don't wish me a Happy Memorial day - there is nothing happy about brave men and women dying for their country. 2. Its not a holiday or a sale, its a day of remembrance of our fallen military, period. 3. You want to know the true meaning of Memorial Day, visit your local National Cemetery or VA Hospital, not Disney land or the mall to grab a sale. 4. Don't tell me how great anyone in political power is, tell me about Robert Howard, Franklin Miller, Chesty Puller, George Patton, John Basilone, Dakota Meyer, Kyle Carpenter, John Steele, and Ira Hayes...Don't recognize them? , that's easy, plug their names into Google and be prepared to be amazed and honored at their exploits. 5. I have carried the burden all too many times for my fellow warriors who now stand their post before God. 6. Say a prayer, and then raise a glass and thank God for the men and women who have paid the ultimate price and who are no longer here. I will be raising a glass for my fallen Brothers and Sisters who I served with. 7. The time to thank a Veteran is in November on Veteran's Day. God Bless America and her Fallen Heroes!

This day has become a commercialized sale and reason to party. I agree with the not wishing a happy memorial day. I think some forget that pleasantry doesn't belong.

Everything gets commercialized and I hate it. I remember when I was a child in a small town all the businesses would close on Memorial Day in honor of the fallen soldiers. I wish it was like that again.

@dragon54u I do too. I know some would need to stay open but most don't need to be. or at least shut down for half a day.

I agree it gets out of hand with the happy thing. It is about honoring the fallen men and women and their sacrifices. There was a big firework celebration here just down the road from me and it was just another excuse for these here to get loud and obnoxious so disrespectful of the true meaning. I get it.

Someone wished me that yesterday. I took it in the spirit in which it was meant.

I think many have forgotten what the day is really about. We have become a very shallow, selfish nation. I understand what you are saying but the older I get the more seriously I take this "holiday".

I do agree with the the whole sales and such and getting too carried away on the backyard bbqs. But Wishing someone a happy memorial day is a good thing. Think of it like this. you are wishing someone happy memories of beloved fallen. Yes, they are gone now because they sacrificed their lives to prevent the evil of the world. But it is better to wish someone happy memorial for those who lost their loved ones. Happy Memorial day is not wished the same way as Happy Christmas or Happy New Year. It is to be Happy that you have the memories that you have with people, happy that we are free and that happy that we take the time to think about everyone who has served. At least, that is how I think about it. Maybe I just believe in poetic justice, but it is an honor to have the memories and the stories of those in my family who are no longer with us.

I like the way you think but unfortunately most people who say "happy Memorial Day" have no thoughts at all of our fallen heroes. I will try to adopt your attitude.

This is a very warming thought.
