Snuff Films: Urban Legend or Morbid Fascination?

The hours I spent clicking through the underground websites with the TOR browser weren't in vain. I learned a lot about the human psyche and the obscure fetishes that haunt and taunt some internet surfers. Snuff films are one of the creepier urban legends; that leads to an explanation of what it is. Snuff can be as simple as filming someone being killed, executed, beheaded, electrocuted or a slow painful death from hours [or longer] of torture. Snuff films are always subject to ridicule because of the number of fakes that surface and get posted online. If you post a snuff video, even one that is fake, it will get removed by the provider and if it looks convincing enough, you might end up with someone knocking on your door. What's the attraction to snuff? Morbid curiosity or a deeply ingrained fetish; to date I have only seen one honest to Loki 'snuff' film but that was a person committing suicide [gun to head]. I verified that the person did indeed kill shoot himself in the head and was pronounced died at the scene. The real horror of this is it was being broadcast live on local television stations. No one can say for sure how he managed to get a gun into a government building but this all went down in the 80's before security was a hot topic. There's a sexual slant to some alleged snuff films; sadly they are made to be sold as authentic when they are nothing more than grainy outdated film stock with horrible 'acting'. While I have watched about twenty hours of supposed snuff footage, I can't say that anything I saw looked even remotely authentic. I guess that's a good thing. One of the most well known films that goes into great length about the wold of snuff is “9mm” starring Nicholas Cage. The widow of a recently deceased man hires Cage to investigate the film that was found in her late husbands safe. Just like falling down a rabbit hole, Cage is lost in the dark with this case. He gets help from a slightly quirky Max California; he wants in on the action after Cage uncovers someone that is supposedly 'in the know' about the creation of the film. The movie hs a rough feel to it; while you are watching it you get sucked into the plot and wonder for a good bit of the film if Cage will ever find out who The Machine is and if the girl was killed in the movie or if it was just another runaway that ended up getting recruited to work in the sub-genre of porn. Just your description of 9mm makes me happy I have never seen the film. I know some people get a charge out of watching weird stuff, but... yuck!
