After a fun day meeting a fellow myLotter for lunch I came home, did my chores, and I'm now ready to unleash the next song on my list of favorite "music" songs, or songs that have the word "music" in the title. This is a natural follow-up (at least, in my crazy mind) to the "song" songs (songs with "song" in the title) series. Here's the next song on the list. #9: Some People Call It Music - J.D. Souther I'm absolutely stunned over the announcement that Vince Gill will be joining the Eagles on their "we're finished, oh, wait, no we're not" tour this summer. It seems to me that the far more logical choice would have been John David Souther, for a number of reasons. One, his first album was Longbranch/Pennywhistle, a duet album with Glenn Frey. Two, he's been there since the beginning (you can see him on the back cover of Desperado, playing one of the dead outlaws). Three, he sounds quite a bit like Glenn. And four, the marginally insignificant fact that he co-wrote a lot of Eagles songs (including "New Kid in Town," "Heartache Tonight," and "Best of My Love"). Souther's debut album was released in 1972, the same year that the first Eagles album was released. It was on the same record label. And, if you listen not too closely, you'll hear Glenn Frey singing all over Souther's album. It's almost like Longbranch/Pennywhistle II, except Frey didn't do any lead singing (not that he did that much on the L/P album...I think he only sang lead on two songs). John David Souther is one of my favorite albums, not only from Souther, but from that entire L.A. "Mellow Mafia" gang. The only song from the album that ever made any noise was "How Long," which the Eagles covered on their final album, Long Road Out of Eden. But the album is loaded with terrific songs, including this song that closed out side one (shows you how long I've had it, huh?). The interpretation is, of course, what one considers the it in the title to be: love? Poetry? Music? Sex? The line in the bridge, "I have carried my love in my hands for so long," might lean toward "love" being what Souther had in mind. In the end, it doesn't matter. It's a great song, whatever one wants to define "it" as. Some People Call It Music Written by J.D. Souther Recorded by J.D. Souther From John David Souther, 1972 Till my weary world turns gold:

Make a great case for JD! You may also remember when he teamed with Chris Hillman from Byrds fame and Richie Fury from Poco & Buffalo Springfield, to form the Souther Hillman Fury Band. "Your Only Lonely" from his solo 1979 album and "Our Town" a duet with James Taylor were great ballads. I always felt he should of had greater commercial success as a solo performer. He certainly contributed so many great songs performed by other artists.

Totally agree. At best, he's remembered for those songs he wrote for the Eagles and for being Linda Ronstadt's ex-boyfriend. I got to meet him in 2010 when I went to Nashville to see him live. That was a big thrill.

He is the more logical candidate. But Gill will sell more tickets, so...

@dgobucks226 - It's too bad, because that would be a treat for the die hard fans, and the people that are there for "Hotel California" would still go.

I don't, either. He sang "I Can't Tell You Why" on the tribute album, and he's more of a tenor singer. He'd do well to replace Tim, but Glenn? It also makes me think Glenn's son hasn't been living up to expectations in rehearsals.....
