Life can be a bit like having a biscuit made from sour milk.

You know, it is a fact that ... Buttermilk is sour. It is used in many cooking recipes, among the top of my list would be buttermilk biscuits, but sometimes, even that buttermilk can get a bit too sour. I want to look it up on Google to find out what the facts are behind sour buttermilk: I myself would simply use it up in less than a week and drink the rest. otherwise, I would have to use a powdered buttermilk instead to add to the mix. If such a thing even exists. My wife is the expert, not me. If there is a powder form of buttermilk for baking I will look it up and post it down in the comments section of this discussion to share with all of you good people here at myLot. For example, what's the best way to know if buttermilk has gone bad? We've sniffed out all the answers for you.

I love buttermilk and will drink it straight. Course I wish it were fresh off the farm though that would be better.

I have done that, and I liked it well enough. But I didn't drink enough to use up the quart before it expired. Interestingly, commercial buttermilk is a cultured milk product like yogurt. It's not the same as the buttermilk that is leftover after making butter.

@Ruby3881 I didn't realize this. Interesting fact. The thing I am most concerned about is the shelf life of refrigerated store bought buttermilk. I am certain that at some point it loses it's quality and is no longer suited for use and should be thrown out. Even in a refrigerator buttermilk has it's limited quality life.

Very interesting article on buttermilk. I always thought it was vinegar not lemon juice added to milk to make it buttermilk.
