Happy 200th Birthday to the Bicycle!

I just learned that today, June 12, 2017, is the 200th birthday of something near and dear to my heart: the bicycle.
While this is not the time to go into it, I was taught to ride a bike by an abusive method that should have turned me off of the activity for life. Even at that young age, however, I must have somehow recognized the bicycle's potential, because here I am, at 53, still obsessed with them. Despite occasionally getting sidetracked by things like skateboarding or running, I always come back to cycling.
The health benefits of the sport are numerous. I can usually lose, just by riding my bike, 10-20 pounds a summer, and, as a Bipolar with severe depression and anxiety, riding consistently does wonders for me as well, by giving me something positive on which to focus.
From the very moment I finally figured it out, however, the bike has always represented freedom. When I was a kid, it expanded my territory beyond my neighborhood (out of site, out of mind.) As an adult, it's a temporary escape from life itself. I love riding with friends, but nearly all of my rides are now solo efforts. When I'm in the middle of a 30 mile ride, it's just me, my bike, and whatever song my brain decides to play for me. Nothing matters but that next climb, that next obstacle (if I'm mountain biking,) that next mile, that next spin of the pedals.
Happy 200th Birthday to the bicycle! The photo is of my old Raleigh R-500 road bike.
I've linked an interesting article about the reason what became the bike below:

A happy belated birthday to the bicycle! I have a few friends who live for biking. I remember my childhood days of cycling around on my own (the days when kids were allowed to roam unsupervised) - that was the best! We're waiting for my little one to get to riding . . . then we can all go biking as a family!!

@teamfreak16 You feel a certain kind of freedom when riding a bike - and you "feel" the environment. It's nice to experience that as a kid and take it with you as an adult.

That's always fun. I used to take my ex-girlfriend's kids riding with me quite a bit.

@much2say - I agree. Every kid should get to experience riding a bike. Hopefully, they keep it going once they are old enough to drive.

Thanks for this information. I love cycling as well and I was 4 or 5 years old when I was taught how to ride a bike. I didn't have my own but I stole my brother's BMX then. My mother never really bought me my own bicycle even though she knew I loved it as much as my brother did.

@toniganzon I only got 338 miles in last year, so I'm pretty motivated now that my bike is fixed.

@arthurchappell - No worries. It's not for everyone, otherwise, everyone would be doing it!

That is nice the bicycle has been around a long time. I used to love riding my bike but now I do not like to go near them. I wanted to get a bike some years ago and sat on it and froze. I thought of if I fall off and hurt myself that is not good. I was not young so I eventually got my mobility scooter instead.

I have known a few people that are fearful of bikes. You definitely aren't alone.

Thanks Scott. I just feel sad I cannot ride one anymore. I loved riding a bike, but, that is life.

My son has always been very fond of bikes as well. Sadly for him, the area where he lives now, is not close to any trails.

@teamfreak16 I agree. I think it is nice to use bikes nowadays. Haze is becoming the problem around the globe.

It seems like it would have been around longer. It's come a long way in just a short amount of time.

I know. But then again, the Tour de France is over 100, and Major Taylor was racing in Velodrome's in the early 1900's, so it makes sense.

I can imagine your pleasure at riding your bike. It was the same for me and horses to a degree. I didn't learn to ride a bike till in my teens and never really got to ride it well (always had to stay on the seat for example). I'm looking out for a bike to photograph for you.

I don't think I would do very well on a horse on the other hand. I would have absolutely no idea what to do.
