Favorite Summer Songs #6 - "Summertime"

Everyday, I hear all sorts of people that don't care much for summer. Too hot. It's my opinion that we should embrace summer. After all, you get to wear shorts and flip flops. And that's just one perk! We are at #6 in my Favorite Summer Songs series: "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince.
"Summertime" is from the hip hop duo's 1999 album, Homebase. That record's leadoff single, the tune reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on that magazine's Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, and was the first single of theirs to chart in the UK, where it hit #8. It also received a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
"Summertime," both lyrically and musically, perfectly conjures up the memories of summers past, while giving the listener motivation to make a must-do list for the present summer. The tune heavily samples Kool and the Gang's "Summer Madness," (The funk band was given a writing credit.)
This of course, is before The Fresh Prince began acting and recording under his real name, Will Smith. He is, in the video, as charismatic as ever.

That's too bad. There is some great hip hop out there. This is obviously aimed at the kids on the beach, as well as general fans of both actors.

I have some friends that call this the all time best summer theme song for them - reminds them of "back in the days". I still play this in the car. I've always been a Will Smith fan!

I am kind of weird in that I can usually sleep when it's hot.

It's what a lot of summer songs (by that, I mean songs released for listening to during the summer, not necessarily having "summer" in the title) are: light fluff that's meant to be enjoyed at the beach or the pool.

I do not like that song at all, I prefer the old time version. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong did a great rendition of it.
I used to like the summertime in Ohio. Sure, it got hot but you could sit under a tree and cool off. Swim in a pond or creek or lake or pool. Here in AZ it's so hot that even the shade of the trees is just as hot as in the sun, there is no temperature difference at all. Summertime back home was fun, here it is hell.
Another summer song I like is Summer in the City and Summer Breeze. The panels at the side of this page reminded me of them.
