Irish people aren't descended from the celts?

I am still in the middle of reading the article but know that this is going to be interesting to several of us here on mylot. So here I am sharing it. Article suggests that Ancient Ireland was settled by people of Northern Spain decent as well as some from other Northern European Countries.
Examining what it means to have Irish blood, outlining where Irish DNA comes from and who are the closest genetic relatives of the Irish in Europe. Of interest to anyone with Irish ancestry who wants to understand their genealogy.

I wonder who was there 20,000 years ago.

That's very true @ScribbledAdNauseum I was surprised they didn't mention the vikings, they've been known to travel much farther than many other peoples.

@rebelann I was wondering when they would mention them but nope they didn't. I know the vikings settled on the right side of Britain and made their way to the middle and left side. I read something / watched something about that too but can't remember what / where.

The article I linked to links to others, one namely "first people of Ireland." I don't think we can ever know for certain who was the first of any area, but it's intereting to see hypothesis on it.

My Irish Granny (Mothers Mother) always told me about the link with Spain. It was a good read that article.

@TiarasOceanView Sorry! I wasn't sure what else to say. I am here on mylot, listening to thunderstorms on youtube, doing various tidbits of nonsensical research.. I am a mess. Did your journey to the docs yesterday go okay?

Irish people have definitely descended from the Celts. Northern Spain was a Celtic region. It is also obvious that Scandinavian immigration took place, as it did throughout the whole of Britain, but this was millenia later than the original occupation.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was born in the North of England and therefore probably have a broader spectrum of DNA. Several thousand years after the Celtic migration we were occupied by the Roman Empire, followed later by the Anglo Saxon migration, the Vikings and finally the French. This type of scenario will have existed in many countries.

Part of the article touches on Spain being part of a celtic region, but they didn't go into much detail about that. My DNA makeup suggests Scandinavian descent, but only at 2%.

@Asylum I once read something about America's migration. It has been some time, but it was theorized that we were occupied by Ancient German regions before the Native Americans were settled. I'll have to see if I can't find something else on it. As for England being occupied by the French, I wasn't aware of that. Of course your southern shore isn't very far from France and so I can see where that would have been an easy place to migrate to.

You could still have Irish in you as Irish folk have crossed to Scotland and vice versa in history... The Giant's Causeway in Antrim has a tale that connects with another place in Scotland. Can't remember what it's called. The tale basically says that a Giant once walked across? I can't actually remember the tale either! haha.

@Courtlynn My dad always told me that he was like 3/4 Indian or something like that... I was always told it was like a great great grandfather of mine, but I can't find it in the family line. It would have been Cherokee as well.

Interesting read. My sister traced it back to somewhere/someone in Ireland, but I never wondered about what came before.

I've always wondered that. One person who studied my surname says we derive from the picts but a lot of her research is shoddy so I can't exactly believe that. Feasible since we came from the upper most part of Ireland but not necessarily true either.

@ScribbledAdNauseum - Apparently, we have a tartan and everything. I'd get a kilt, but I really have nowhere to wear it other than the St.Patrick's Day parade.

Very interesting, I am 38% Irish according to my DNA, in our particular family there are no redheads and as far back as I can find , there have not been any. My brothers are 44 and 45% Irish and they have light hair and eyes, I have dark brown hair, with a reddish tint, and brown eyes. Plenty of freckles too!!

I don't have many freckles but I am very very pale and burn easily! I'm 30% Irish, 42% Great British. There's no redheads in my fam that I know of either.

We have Irish everywhere in mine! My dad's side, my mom's grandmother's side, possibly my grandfather's father's side, and then my other grandmother's mother's side. I have 30% Irish in me according to ancestry.com. My grandfather (on my mom's side) has done his and I can't wait to see what it says! Oh and I hope your family will be interested in it. It's not as long a read as I originally thought, and so I finished it (with distractions) in like 15 minutes.
