Auto-Piloting

We do so many things without really thinking about them. Anything from walking, eating; even driving. I call that Functioning on Auto-Pilot. When the subconscious takes over because of repetition, it can become very dangerous. An example would be: taking the same route to work everyday. Your subconscious becomes so use to taking that route that before you know it, you've gone several blocks without realizing it. Another would be: eating and drinking. It becomes just a habit to do that, so sometimes you inhale a breath and swallow at the same time causing you to choke. Just something as simple as walking or going down steps becomes so automatic that that is when you can trip or fall. It's one thing for the subconscious to take over when you are sleeping; allowing your conscious mind to rest, it's quite another to allow the subconscious to become part of your daily activities. We've all done it (auto-pilot): can't remember why we went to the kitchen; where are my keys; did I miss my turn or go through a stop sign; did I miss an appointment; where did I put that paperwork. If we concentrate more on what it is that we are doing, it might keep the synapses of the brain more active and alert. Just a thought from me to you.

My most dangerous auto-pilot mode is when I go down the steps early in the morning in total dark. I count the steps, but a couple of times I missed.

@nanette64 Sometimes even when I store things in the kitchen, I do in the wrong drawer or cabinet and then I spend hours searching.

I hate when that happens Nanette. Mindless and then accidents happen to me.

It can be soooo dangerous @TiarasOceanView . It happened to me just the other night. I went to take a drink of water and for some reason took in a deep breath at the same time. I was choking my brains out.

I listen to books on CD while I drive but I am able to stay aware I'm driving and shut it down if traffic gets out of control. I often get into a room and wonder why.. thanks for the post , I will be paying more attention now.
