The disappearance of Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan have been a mystery for 80 years. Several eye witnesses, photos, Morse code transmissions and parts of the plane as well as their graves have been discovered. The plane originally landed on Endriken Island just south of the Marshall Islands; which at the time was controlled by Japan. The plane was loaded onto a barge and transferred to Saipan. A medic by the name of Bilimon Amaron (still alive) treated both of them for minor injuries. It was Josephine Akiyama (still alive) that saw Japanese soldiers taking Earhart and Noonan to the Garafan Prison. In 1944, the US invaded Saipan and two soldiers; Billie Burkes and Everett Henson were told to dig up the graves of Earhart and Noonan; which was verified by General Alexander VanDergiff. The sad part of it all is that the US government knew about everything and did nothing to rescue the two of them. Documents and photos were discovered in the National Archives. One thing's for sure, we now know that they didn't die at sea from a plane crash.
Airing Sunday, the film suggests that the aviator and her navigator were spotted on an atoll in the Marshall Islands.

War is a dirty thing. I heard the US knew about jews being killed as well, but Olympic games were held in Germany and the US sent its sportspersons there.

@topffer .. All the more reason that America should have intervened? Right?

The problem is that there was no war between Japan and USA in 1937.

It makes no sense : why the Japanese would have arrested Aerhart 4 years before the war with USA ? I looked for the picture, and I post it. If you can recognize Aerhart, Noolan or the model of the plane on it, hats off ! It is just a new conspiracy theory.

@nanette64 I do not doubt a second that the photo is 100% authentic, but to identify the back of somebody is something else, and in this case it is just impossible : all we can tell is that it is a woman showing her back with a haircut popular in the 1930s. The plane also is not identifiable. It is not enough to tell that it is Aerhart.

Earhart is the one sitting down and Noonan is at the far left holding a sign @topffer . This photo was analyzed by Doug Carter and photo recognition done by Kent Gibson and it is 100% authentic. She was arrested simply because the Marshall Islands were under Japanese rule. She would have been considered a spy.

There is a hotel in Germany named after Amelia. Her portrait is in the lobby.

I digress from this documentary but I have toured the home in Atchison, Kansas where Earhart was born and grew up.

That's pretty neat @JohnRoberts . It's a shame her remains never made it back to Kansas.

I read about this mystery several months ago, with a different ending. Glad if the truth about their last days has been confirmed finally.
