Would you buy or adopt an animal as a pet?

Since I lost my cat last year, I decided not to have any pet for a while so I can recover well from this great loss and think about it better through this time alone whether I would have another cat or even a dog. At present, I am beginning to feel the time has almost come for me to decide about it. I am checking animal shelters and also NGOs that take care of homeless animals to see if I find another pet to adopt. This is a practice of mine as my opinion is that souls can't be bought, so I better go for adoption and this is it for me. But I'd like to know your opinion about that. What would you do? Would you buy a soul or adopt one as a pet?

I would adopt, I will not encourage breeders to continually add to the overpopulation of pets because so many end up either on the streets starving or in shelters where they are eventually euthanized.

We adopted our dog from our local Humane Society. Whether adopting from a shelter or buying from a seller, you're still putting money down on an animal so, technically, you're "buying a soul" either way. The only way you wouldn't be "buying a soul" is if you found the dog as a stray (or he found you) or someone flat-out gives you the animal. For free.

@manandezo You don't pay adoption fees at your animal shelter? We had to pay $200 to adopt our dog from our local Humane Society. We could have gotten a puppy for free, via craigslist, or spent a similar amount to get a dog from a breeder. That's why I say that, either way, we're spending money to buy a dog. Our shelters don't give dogs out for free. We're essentially buying them.

Hummm, I don't know if I understood the part of "adopting" a dog from a shelter is a "buying" transaction, as these animals were rescued from the streets and the shelter is giving you the pet. Shelters here where I live are really very poor institutions and they survive from donations we give them to take good care of animals they rescue and they don't receive anything back. Anyway, I thank you for stopping by and comment. Have a good day @Genipher! =)

@Genipher Oh no, here is not like that. Shelters really give us the pets for free. There is no need to pay any fee or anything else. You just go, fill in a form so they can visit you and the pet for one year and check if everything is ok with it and you can take the pet. If they see something bad happening, they have the right to take the animal away from you and you still have to respond charges pressed against you for the bad treatment dispensed. That is the law here and it works. And I thank you for the information about how things are done there. It is good to learn with everyone! =)

There are so many stray cats where I live so if I ever decide to have a pet, I would just take one of these strays. But alas, I don't really like looking after a pet. It's not that I hate animals. I just don't like having them around. It might be the way I was brought up.

I can understand it, @UmiNoor! My grandmother was also like this and she couldn't take care of pets herself and she didn't want any around her as well. She loved animals, but not in her home. Thank you for your visit and comment! =)

No ..I am not going to have any pets again in life .. that's for sure. It's so painful when they leave us. Even more hurting when we see them in pain.

I would love to adopt a dog since they make great friends for life with humans.

@manandezo Most of the dogs I have owned were adopted or they given to my relatives by breeders of dogs that could afford to keep them.

@Deepizzaguy That is a great move of yours. Adoption should be a practice everyone has to think about before spending money to acquire a soul. Thank you for your comment!

You don't need to. Just keep the pet if you love it!
