Why should children carry heavy bags in digital India?

Our honourable Prime Minister wants to see a digital India that would make all aspects of life easier. Will that only stick at money transaction and online payments? School children in India still carry heavy bags to school especially those going to English medium schools. Can't we have digital libraries in all the schools which children can open using their notebooks(laptops)? Don't you think our country should have good connectivity that everybody could afford and also notebooks that every student could purchase? I teach student based abroad. Most of them have their digital book, a user name and password which they give me to log in and refer to their book. Can't we in India do the same?

You are right because our politicians want such people to vote for them who they can fool. Education goes against that.

It is not easy to implement digital libraries and provide them with laptops since there is huge expenditure involved. Majority of the schools in India are run by the central and state board . There have been improvements and already steps are being taken to reduce the burden..

In Kendriya Vidyalays they have already made it mandatory for teachers to load contents of their classes so that students can refer to it. We need only a few computers in school and the government can make notebooks cheaper for school students. If the government can spend so much on defence deal then why not on education. If this can happen in Europian countries and middle east why can't it happen in India?

@aninditasen We have to see it in the right perspective, taking into consideration the practical difficulties that India faces. While I am all for reducing the burden which is actually now being done by schools by providing lockers , providing computers and notebooks will come with its own set of problems and we need not emulate Europe because the conditions there are different . The very fact that Indian students having studied in Indian schools are able to make a mark all over the world says something about our educational system. It is not perfect but it is not bad either.

@kiran8 It's not a question of emulation but making learning easier for students. Today what our Indians have achieved, all the credits go to them and their parents who have to spend a lot not the Indian education system. I am the mother of such an Indian so I know what and where we and my son have invested.

It would be ideal if this was to happen. I agree, why not go all out so that kids do not have to carry heavy bags. This would be more convenient and less bother. I hope that one day India will consider this.
