My Dad is Not Very Bright Sometimes

United States

Yesterday morning my dad picked me up to take me to my doctor appointment, and he honked the horn at me while I was locking up my front door, which I thought was rude and irritated me. Then as soon as I climbed in the car, he thrust the day's newspaper at me and exclaimed: "Look, your brother-in-law is in the paper!" First of all, I don't HAVE any brother-in-laws, which confused the hell out of me. Then when I looked at the picture he was jabbing at, I saw my uncle Rick's face staring back at me. So it was HIS brother-in-law (his sister's husband,) but certainly not MINE! I informed him of this, rather crossly since I had barely gotten any sleep and he had ticked me off by honking the horn at me when I was already on my way down to the car. He seemed baffled by how my uncle wasn't, in fact, my brother-in-law. Sometimes my dad is not the brightest crayon in the box. I got a laugh out of it after the fact, but when it happened I was annoyed. Did he forget that I am his daughter, not his wife? Or did he assume that since my uncle Rick is HIS brother-in-law, that makes him my brother-in-law once removed or something? Alas, we shall never know what he was thinking. Maybe he just wasn't.

My father is just as impatient as yours and would beep if he had to wait a second as well. That is very frustrating! He always acted like I had nothing going on in my life and I should always be ready at the second he arrived.

@Srbageldog My father would always yell for me being too slow for sure. I used to let it get to me because to this day he would treat me like a child if I still lived in the same town as him. Thank God I am states away now so things have changed a bit.

@LovingMyBabies My dad and I had a huge falling out last year after he screamed at me and raised his hand like he was going to slap me. I cut off all contact with him for months after that. Now he doesn't act so badly but every once in a while he gets snippy or chews me out. It's hard having a relationship with a parent who is at times verbally abusive. When I was younger he was also physically abusive and if he ever tries to lay a hand on me again that's it, I won't be forgiving him again.

It is frustrating. My dad has bad arthritis so he can't climb my stairs anymore, so I do make sure I am ready and keeping an eye out for him, but when he's out there leaning on his horn when I'm already hurrying out the door it's very annoying! And then when he does that I never know if he's going to yell at me for being too slow or if he'll just act like nothing happened.

I'm used to it, or at least I should be. It still irritates me when he does stuff like that though.

He was actually very pleased that Rick was in the paper. Maybe he was anxious to show me and tried to hurry me downstairs by honking his horn!

He is not known to be a great thinker, haha. We try to humor him but I get annoyed when he does rude things like honk the horn at me to get me to hurry up when he can see I'm already hurrying.

Maybe he meant " my" instead of your, old people do that sometimes. Why was he in the newspaper? Good or bad?

He's involved with opening a Chinese school in the town next to us. So it was a good thing. Usually when my relatives are on the front page of the paper it's bad! But my uncle Rick is a decent person, probably because he's not blood related.

Hope your Dad is annoyed on something and just showing the anger on you. After all you are his daughter so take it easy.

He wasn't annoyed at all, he was in a really jolly mood. Maybe he thought it was funny to honk the horn at me.

Maybe he was just trying to make a joke on you or something. At least you have a dad that takes you to the doctor.

Maybe he just wanted to be weird like my Father used to be. It makes no sense some of the things they do.

My dad is definitely weird! I take notes of some of the weird things he does or says because a lot of it is good writing material.
