Oh la-la what an eye full. Last night was the final performance of the Heiva. The month long celebration has come to an end today. The dancers are exhausted and ready for a break. Sitting there watch all these young firm bodies dancing in almost nothing was just what I needed. OK it is not quite like this. The Heiva is a month long competition for the best of the best. Here the dance groups compete for the best dancers and the best performance. There is also canoe races, coconut tree climbing, spear throwing, rock lifting, and races carring fruit attached to wood on your shoulders. However, if you were to see the dancers you would know what I mean. After getting started the young dancers skin glistens with sweat. The strong muscular bodies and the dance steps, makes your mind wonder. The dances are beautiful, full of life, color, and movements. If you have ever been to Tahiti you will know why people fall in love with the islands. It isn’t just for our beautiful weather, lagoons of crystal clear water, or the lush environment. It is for the song and dances here on the islands. Have you ever been to Tahiti – no Hawaii doesn’t count? Hawaii has its own natural beauty and culture. However, the dance is not the same as it is here on the islands. The movements are different and so is the music.

This was a joke about the Chippendales. But the guys here could easily qualify to be one. They are muscular and very handsome with their dark skin.

I actually went to see the real Chippendales when they came here one year. We all had a blast and the men were gorgeous and nice.

It was a fun night. One time I visited the US and went to see the Chippendales. A few years back they actually came to Tahiti. It was a sold out evening, but my friend and I were able to get tickets. Great show!

Tahiti is living in paradise. It is a beautiful place to live. Here the children are so free and you don't have to worry about them. I love the islands and was so glad when they sent me here 25 years ago to work. I never want to live anywhere else again.

The one I used in the photo is my boyfriend. Everyone that sees him dance wants a picture with him.

I have never been to Tahiti or Hawaii. It sounds like these men need a lot of skills. Here in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho and Oregon) they have a loggers competition where loggers show off their skills such as sawing a log with a two man handsaw, two men rolling a log in the water to see which man can stay on the log and tree climbing. Of course with modern equipment none of these skills are need anymore. There is a machine that will cut the tree down, remove the branches and cut the tree into log lengths while all the operator of the machine does is sit in a cab and drive the machine to the trees and pull some levers.

Yes modern day technology seems to ruin all the fun.

The dance groups on the islands are beautiful. They are fantastic to watch. It takes them 6 months to prepare for a show. So you know a lot of time and work goes into this. Plus all the customs they have make it worth seeing. It takes a long time to make these costumes and when you have a group of 150 men and women you know it is worth taking the time to go and see.
