NOT GIVING IT UP.

Is there anything that was used decades ago for food preparation that you still make use of in 2017? I was a bit surprised one Sunday when I visited the friend of a friend who lived in a suburb of the city. In a covered area in the back of her yard, she was boiling peas on a coal pot like the one pictured above. Her kitchen , by the way- was fitted with modern appliances including a six- burner gas stove - but according to her, she preferred cooking certain foods on her coal pot - and her gas lasted longer. A coal pot can be messy, so I am not sure I would ever use one unless I absolutely had to. However , a grater still hangs in my kitchen. I use it for grating nutmeg , coconut and other food items. I doubt I will be giving that up anytime soon. What about you? - anything old fashioned that you won't want to give up? Anything at all - not only kitchen appliances.

My gas stove is an antique. But when I call the technicians to clean it and ask them if I should change it, they all tell me no new stove is as good as mine.

I agree with you there. Some modern appliances lack the quality of the older type ones.

When we had our kitchen gutted and redone, I bought every single thing new. My old pots and pans were shipped to Florida.

We still have the piece of wood with a sharp jagged metal to desiccate coconut. Our land tenant would sometimes bring some coconut so we use that.

@cacay1 Whenever the tenant of a land my hubby's family own, delivers fruits and coconuts already good for coconut milk for cooking, hubby would always be the one desiccating the coconut for cooking veggies with it.

I still use a grater too and I still use a pot my grandmother had to make porridge or rice in, the base has the right thickness to cook those properly. :)

I realize the coalpot as we know it is a foreign concept to a lot of people. But it is what families used in many parts of the world. It is quite similar to the coal BBQ that many use in the western world.

It could be real handy during a power outage and if - for whatever reason - no gas can be had.
