Places I want to see: Chernobyl

So, after I talked about places I have been, I think it would be fun to talk about places I want to see.
But first I want to talk about my philosophy on travel, since it's probably different than - well - a lot of people's. :-)
Most of the time I would rather spend money locally - in, say a 5 hour radius of "home". Why? Because chances are if I went further, and found something I really liked - I wouldn't be able to return often, and people I met would be online acquaintances at best, since distance would prevent us from seeing more of each other.
I have a friend who is preparing to go to Scotland in autumn. So this summer she is skipping a lot of local events in order to save enough money for the trip. While I commend her for doing so- and realize that neither way is right or wrong - I am the opposite. Let's spend money on the events and things that are here and now.
I know, maybe it's odd thinking. But it is my thought process none-the-less.
However there are a few exceptions... but these distant places that I want to see are not (usually) the typical "tourist" places that people go to. (Places of tropical beauty, etc... though ask me again about wanting to see the tropical beauty in about 5 months when we are in the middle of winter here.)
So to kick this off, let's take one of the oddest places that I really feel compelled to see: The power plant at Chernobyl and the abandoned city nearby called Pripyat.
There was an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear plant in 1986. The history surrounding this is actually quite fascinating... how it was handled at the time, why it happened, the science behind nuclear power, the containment dome - for some reason all these things interest me. And I am amazed at the abandoned city, the haunting images of the Ferris wheel and amusement park which were never used, abandoned houses, pool, gym, relics, left behind, dealerships with cars, and equipment that was too contaminated to be used...
For some reason - instead of Hawaii and it's beaches or Brazil or some other tropical paradise - I want to see Chernobyl so bad that it is like I feel compelled. I don't know why.
(No offense to Hawaiians and Brazillians.)
Here is a link to Kidd of Speed - a woman who motorcycles into the area often to take pictures. She has written a great commentary on the accident, and many great photos. I highly recommend clicking through her site if the topic interests you.
During years of my interest in Chernobyl, I have collected rare and unique materials of Chernobyl accident and it's aftermath.

I understand both your friend and your on the events things. Im in between. I like to do stuff that are local snd close but here thats not much. So i do like to save and do stuff away, like wrestling shows or theme parks.
That is certainly no place i would go. Lol

@Courtlynn I don't know much about it / don't watch it often, but I think it would be amazing to see it live

What are some of your favorite places you've seen? I don't know why even this place pulls at me so, but it does....

@FayeHazel We loved Hong Kong, Rio, Barcelona, Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Shanghai, Egypt, Prague, Turkey, Sweden, Amsterdam, Denmark, Budapest, Venezuela, Hawaii, Bermuda, St Martin, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Greece, etc.... We have fun wherever we go and each place is so unique! There are so many wonderful places to see in the USA. I've been to Canada three times. That's the only place I don't care for.

@DianneN Lol - I haven't been to Canada, either... so many great places on your list and I agree I think so many places on earth are special in their own way. Actually I'm struck by the awesome small town non-tourist places... I wonder how many really great places there that are out of the way like that

You do realize that place is radio active? Make sure you have a precaution before going over there.

Thanks for the head's up. Actually I don't think the Russian government even allows people to visit though there must be a way in. :-)

I have wondered too, I really do feel a strong pull, compulsion, for some reason to be there. Like I need to be there. It's the oddest thing.

I'm like you...I prefer to keep my money local. However, with that being said, in my younger days I did quite a bit of globetrotting. And I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Chernobyl myself. It would be interesting to see what's left of the entire contaminated area.

@FayeHazel I don't know if I have a favorite place. Within the US, Yosemite National Park is by far my favorite national park. I also love New York City, it's one of my favorite big cities in the world. London probably takes a close second. Costa Rica and Belize are amazing, but then again so was Japan. It's hard to decide what was my favorite, because they were all great places!

What was one of your favorite places you've seen? Ah, so happy my way of thinking makes sense to someone else. -- There are so many fascinating sights from what I've seen in pictures to the contaminated area

@FayeHazel I always try to be really law-abiding when I'm overseas. Some young people have no commonsense and find themselves in all sorts of messes.

@JudyEv Ah yes - it's true. Sometimes I can't believe the things that people didn't think through

I don't think so, alas. Though... there must be a way in there. ... Then again I would hate to be spent to Russian jail, or whatever the punishment is for trespassing

If the place is safe to visit, then look into what it takes to go there.

I try to keep my money as locally as possible. I always shop at locally owned businesses as much possible.

Always a good plan. My dad loves fast food - a serious addiction. I prefer going out less but eating at the little locally owned places where my $ actually means something
