How to Answer The Stranger Smile

I guess it happens with all of us. And just our way to answer differs. I was out walking somewhere and i saw a person passing by. He smiles at me and slightly bowed his head as he was greeting me. I was shell shocked haha as I don't remember the person but I answered with a smile haha. I don't know how to handle these situations. What would you have done? Will you answer with smile or go away or even ask the person it's name?

I would smile and say hello. People in the south have the reputation of being friendly. We speak to everyone and their brother.

Ask a person "its" name? No when passing its just being polite to smile and/or nod. But if the come up to you, yes ask "their" name.

I would do like you did and smile. Maybe eveb a little comment like how is your day? It makes me feel good when people smile at me whether we know each other or not.

@dollaboy That is what I usually do. If it is an elderly person that is when I make the little saying.

I would have answered with a smile, it happens many times that a stranger smiles at me. I think there is nothing wrong in smiling back.

I would just smile back. Here in the southern US, we smile and speak to everyone. We wave at cars in case the driver is someone we know.

I always answer a courtesy with a courtesy, a little kindness never hurt anyone.

I just react similarly to the other person . . . if they smile, I will smile back . . . if they say hi, I will say hi. In most cases, it's just a passing by greeting.
