Who Taught Me Spanish.....

Pamplona, Spain

Apart from writing letters to my boyfriend over here it was almost zero the chances. I did not fancy anyone translating personal letters to me either in Spanish. So when he sent me what were the 45´s records of then and they were mostly about a great singer who lived at that time. He sang very well and very clearly so I hit on using my tatty dictionary and writing verbs down from what he sang and took it from there. It was a bit laborious but I did start to learn something. Okay I did not learn the pronounciation till I actually got here and started picking up how the lorry driver´s used to speak for a while. But then I dropped that form of speaking Spanish as it was not the done thing and I wanted to learn the every day to day language. So all thanks to this guy Nino Bravo I managed to get ahead and learn by myself all the ins and outs. Not the most conventional way to do things but that is all I had at that time.

@amadeo I do a lot of catching up with every day events too language wise and also in English. Most of it you can catch on television with the way some people express themselves.

That is a good way to learn a language. Try as I do I still can't pick up on another language.

I think I paid more attention to him as well as I was trying to pick up the verbs which is where I started off. Of course it was far from perfect as they give those very verbs different meanings.

@lovinangelsinstead21 It is funny how the wording is different depending on what part of the country you are in,

@velvet53 I would say that there is a difference. What I thought meant one thing meant the other.

Because I live here day to day basis it was a must for me to learn it properly for all everyday things you see. They taught me how to drop the english accent whilst speaking it also. In a way it worked and in other ways my dialect still comes out there.

Spanish is my first language because I am Peruvian born but I struggle understanding Castillan Spanish sometimes. It is different from Latin American Spanish.

Its true that in Spanish there are different ways of expression but I find them to be one and the same if you dig a bit deeper. I learned a lot through seeing Soap Operas from ages back but I don´t see much of them now. Verbs like manejar means in Spanish here conducir un coche and there are a huge amount of others that I have learned as well from other Latin American Countries I like them all we are one and the same for me at least. If you lived here it would not be hard to pick up the "other Spanish" at all. Have a great day.

@CaptAlbertWhisker You should come over and visit then and in the Registro Offices they have old Registry Books that date back quite a bit also. You should be able to find things out almost for nothing.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Spain is one of the places I want to visit because I have ancestors from Spain and I want to know more about my roots.

I did really but he helped me a lot but of course he never knew it. He was just singing away on the single that I was playing and I was looking up all the new verbs. Thank you.

As I was saying to Gill its been fun and a lot. That way no one would translate my letters for me and I had to do it all by myself. He already knew English anyway.

Hmmm maybe I should try it that way too. Learn Spanish through a song. I used to listen to Shakira and J.Lo songs but then I still am no good with Spanish up to now.

Nino Bravo sang very clearly so you would not miss a word of his hardly. Okay so its a very long time back but I learned with him a lot and still am. Shakira is a great singer but sometimes its not easy to learn with her in that sense. In any case David Bisbal sings quite clear too try and listen to him and see if you can get ahead that way. Manuel Carrasco is also nice.

When I was learning English, I did listen to a lot of American songs and bought the lyrics for them. I did learn a lot too from just listening.

Nino Bravo sang very clearly so it was easy to pick up the verbs from what he was singing and much better than other Spanish singers. Camilo Sesto is also very good.
