Even though it didn't fit, a late night listen to "Solitude" by Denver goth band Caustic Soul inspired this latest theme, my Favorite "Silent" Songs series, featuring songs with "silent," or "silence" in the title. We are at #9, the classic "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel.
Originally known as "The Sounds of Silence," the song first appeared on Simon and Garfunkel's 1964 debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. The record performed so abysmally that the duo broke up.
However, Boston and Florida radio stations began playing the tune, causing producer Tom Wilson, unbeknownst to either Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel, to remix the track, which was then released as a proper single in 1965, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1966. Naturally, a reunion was in order, and the song was included on the folk duo's second album, Sounds of Silence.
The song was an international sensation, reaching Top 5 status in nine other countries, and has been certified gold in both the United States and Italy.
Simon and Garfunkel would go on to win 10 Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And it all started with a few Disc Jockeys that liked what they heard.

The song was not hard to like, in fact it could be love at first listen. It was poetically written and at that era the sounds is very catchy.

When he remixed it, the guy edited in the "rock" parts. I'd say he did a good job!

Oh, to have been a DJ back when you could play something like this because you thought your listeners might like it.

In terms of fame, this "Silent" song is probably second only to "Silent Night."

This is a very cool song indeed. They got bushwhacked with how people started playing it with out their knowledge huh. People would throw a fit if that were to happen today. Who cares about finally getting some recognition, I want my money.
