Swimming pools I have known

A recent discussion with @moffitjc lead me to write about swimming pools today.
Even though I live in the "land of 10,000 lakes" I far prefer swimming pools. They are clean and there are no fish to nip at you. I would rather have chemicals than bacteria. :-)
So this brings me to swimming pools I have known. The pool at my local YMCA is large, Olympic sized with lanes for the lap swimmers, and a big open area for everyone else. They also have a small pool that is warmer for people with joint conditions and certain of the water fitness classes. The area is very plain. Then there's the pool over at Sta-fit which is much smaller however the area is much cleaner than the Y. There is the beautiful pool at the casino I visit occasionally- the area is sculpted to look like a forest complete with a rock wall that goes into the hot tub. At the other casino was a pool - plain little pool on ground level - but you had to walk through the lobby to get to the pool. Made no sense to me as people would stare. At a hotel I stay at on occasion there is another beautiful pool area, the whole area has huge windows and is sculpted to look like a garden. Of course there was the odd pool in Iowa's Howard Johnson - the entire room being a dark royal blue, very off putting. Then there is the outdoor pool here in town. It is very basic but large and clean. But then the idea of an outdoor pool makes little sense to me as we can only use it for a few months in Minnesota.
One time, at the sta-fit pool - I went to swim. The water was cloudy. I didn't think much of it. The next day it was cloudier yet, but people were still swimming. I didn't swim, because I didn't trust it. The next day after that - the pool was lime green. People were still swimming. No way I was getting in there. The next day it was closed and the water was no longer see through and was a pea green color. As it cleared up there was a rainbow-y oil swimming on the top of it. My best guess was that it was the chemical they used to clear it up. Eventually it did get back to clear water.
I have heard that it takes a lot to maintain a commercial swimming pool. I'd believe it.

Oh cool! My insurance no longer pays for the YMCA membership. (They cover other gyms now) However when I went to our Y the pool was always very well kept -- a warm pool, a large pool and a hot tub :-)

Everytime I see a swimming pool my first thought is wondering if I could skateboard in it. And I don't even skate anymore.

I don't know about going to pools anywhere since people kept peeing or pooping on the pool. I'm glad I don't go to private resorts anymore.

Ah. One would hope that people wouldn't relieve themselves in the pool -- ick.

@FayeHazel , yes, nothing yuck a person could step on in a crystal clear pool. I don't understand how those people did swim in that soupy mess.

There is such comfort in being able to see in the crystal clear water. I agree - I was shocked that people were swimming in that group soupy mess ick

Ah, now the sea that would be a different thing. The sea is salt water, which is practically a disinfectant in itself.... that's awesome. Pity I'm in the middle of the US. very land locked lol

Oh oh. That's a good question. I always assumed it was because of the chemicals alone...

We had a house for a while which had a big pool and it was a lot of work. We fell in love with the house and decided to buy it before we looked out the back and saw the huge pool. That was the one thing we didn't want - a pool! But we really enjoyed it in the summer and all learnt to swim a bit better because of it.

Don't they clean the pools out each day? You mentioned you live in the land of 10,000 lakes? I grew up in MInneapolis and we had many lakes. Are you from Minnesota?
