Ten Favorite Solo Beatles Songs: Crackerbox Palace (#10)

I just started a list of favorite Beatles songs. But, as we all know, the Beatles broke up, giving us four very distinctive solo careers. From those solo songs I'm picking ten favorites. I limited myself to a maximum of three from each solo career to try to make it more balance, but even as I brainstormed songs I saw that it came out pretty balance. Here's the first song. #10: Crackerbox Palace (George) If you want to know just how good and how bad it was to be a Beatle, 1976 showed it. McCartney toured the US in the massively successful "Wings Over America" tour (which culminated with a live album and a film). George Harrison, on the other hand, was dealing with the aftermath of the lawsuit over "My Sweet Lord," which was ruled to be plagiarized from the Chiffons' hit "He's So Fine." But Harrison rebounded quite nicely with one of his biggest albums, Thirty Three & 1/3, which contained "Crackerbox Palace" and "This Song," which was almost Harrison laughing at himself over the lawsuit ("don't infringe on anyone's copyright," "my expert tells me it's okay"), as singles. "Crackerbox Palace" has some terrific slide work in it. It also shows the subtle humor of the Quiet Beatle, thanks to the opening line, "I was so young when I was born." According to Picky Wedia, the song's title came from Harrison's admiration of Lord Buckley, who called his house "crackerbox palace." The promotional video was directed by Eric Idle, with whom Harrison was close friends. I never heard that tune honestly...but George has been widely regarded as the best musician of the Beatles group.

I suspect poor Ringo will get the short end here.

This is one of my favorite songs by George (and one of my favorite Beatles solo songs.) I always loved George, he's always been my favorite Beatle. :)

This is one Beatle I don't know too much about. Thanks for this song. I'll check out some more of George's songs.

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air...oh, wait. It peaked at #19 on the Billboard charts according to the Whitburn. It isn't all that well-remembered...radio can't stop playing "My Sweet Lord" long enough to play this one, y'know.....

@teamfreak16 -- did you see my comment on the discussion about ESPN and their announcer named Robert Lee? The lead character's name in that series was originally named Hinkley, but they changed it after Reagan was shot.
