Did God ask too much from Abraham?

Was it unjust or too much for God to ask Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac? (See Genesis chapter 22 for the full story) Some people think so. But then who gave Abraham his son anyway? His wife Sarah was past childbearing age and God had revived the reproductive powers of his wife. Isaac was a special gift. Abraham and Isaac knew God well and did not think that God was unjust and had full trust that whatever God asked of them would work out well in the end. So they believed and so it worked out! Abraham had great faith and he was not disappointed!

What is the lesson of this story? Sometimes God seems to be unfair but in the end he is really not. He is always good

Yes, there are things in this world that may seem to be unfair but we can be sure that obedience to God in the long run will always bring blessings to us. Abraham was blessed for his obedience and became the father of a nation that still exists today and is an example of faith for all Christians that put faith in his son Jesus Christ who actually sacrificed his life in our behalf.

When you have faith and respect with the person in authority, you never question that authority at all. It's the same with the Almighty. If we have faith and trust in Him, everything He says is unquestionable.

I understand what you are saying! Somebody once put it this way. If God asks us to jump, we don't ask why but how high should we jump. The Bible is full of questions, some God answers and some God answers later.

@1hopefulman He is someone who'd never ask us to do silly things that might harm us anyway.

@toniganzon We can trust him, even if we might not fully understand something at times. He loves us and wants the best for us. Whatever he asks us to do will work out well in the long run. Things worked out very well for Abraham and Isaac and God showed in a dramatic way the love and sacrifice he was going to make for us so that by putting faith in his son, we could have everlasting life.

As far as I remember, Isaac was about 25 years old that time, and he wanted to do God's will, like his father Abraham. Both knew, that even if Isaac would lose his life, God could wake him up again. They had a complete trust in their Heavenly Father and to His promise that Isaac would be the father of many, like he actually became, a big nation.

Well you made me want to read chapter 22 again. I must soon. One part of this has created a question for me. When did this kill the first born child actually start. Do you know? The act was so very .. well terrible. I agree Abraham's faith kept his family together.

That was a very powerful request. Abraham was a little perturbed. Maybe he wasn't sure what to think. But it was a test. And Abraham followed. How faithful Abraham was!!!!

The Bible calls Abraham a man of great faith. Of course if God spoke to me, my faith would go up a few notches.

Don't think the current interpretation of the RC Church would let God, our merciful creator, demands such a thing. The Old Testament tends to show God differently to the New Testament. (But that is why the New Testament is not accepted by Judaism.)

The Jews don't accept Jesus as the Messiah and they are still waiting for the Messiah. Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies and there will not be another Messiah.

"Comply before you complain", that's what they say in thr military, perhaps faith is also like that

Yes, Abraham and Isaac did not complain. They complied. They did not question. They knew that the person who made the request loved them and knew that the request would not be detrimental but would bring future blessings.

In this case the human sacrifice did not happen, while he accepted the sacrifice of his own son.

Yes, God was going to provide a sacrifice that would bring everlasting life to all who would put faith in his son. We might not understand the pain that God went through but we can put ourselves in the shows of Abraham and understand how painful such a sacrifice would be.

He is God. He always knows best. We don't even have to ask ourselves if He was asking for too much. Although, as humans, we do have a tendency to question issues and situations. Whenever I have thought about it in the past, it always did seem like a lot, but we never need to question it.

I think that only someone who hasn't gotten to know God well would ask some questions. What is interesting is how quickly Abraham obeyed. No wonder that he is the only person in the Bible to be called God's friend. James 2:23 Authorized (King James) Version 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
